WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM THE QUEEN'S COUNSEL

Ever since I first introduced The Queen as a helpful archetype for midlife women, I have received hundreds of requests for detailed instructions on how to become a Queen.

"Dear Mama Donna," women would write, "I want to be a Queen, too. How do I access my power? How can I feel good about myself? How do I change my life? How do I find magic and spiritual wisdom? How do I know what to do? How do I learn how to rule?"

The reality is that I cannot possibly know how anyone else will attain her Queendom, I only know how I came into mine, and that is largely through hindsight. The truth, my truth, at least, is that there is no one true truth. We must each find our own way in this world.

As a shaman, I teach through example, but not through dictum. I can and do offer information, exposure, personal experience, encouragement, inspiration, suggestions and support to my constituents, but I cannot - dare not - pass judgment or establish rules and laws. It is simply not for me to say.

When you come to me for help and spiritual guidance, I listen to your concerns and embrace your needs. I pat you on the back, give you a good, swift kick in the butt, or let you cry on my shoulder, as needed. I can tell you what I did in such and such situation, how I did it, what I learned from this or that lesson, but I cannot tell you what you should do. How do I know what your soul needs?

Only you know what you know. I can, of course, aid you in reaching into the well of your own deepest wisdom, and help you to hear the messages from your best inner Self. And I can offer tools and practices to help you develop the confidence to follow your own purpose, path, passion and power.

A woman who I have been working with recently told me that I had changed her life. "Well, no, of course, I didn't, honey," I assured her. "You changed your own life." The fact of the matter remains that I could not give her what was not already hers.

xxQMD

"We need to accept the dark unknown, perhaps non-understandable magic inside ourselves of which we are afraid. We need to surrender to the womb of life out of which we came; the black velvet void over which we have no control."

RISE OF THE
FEMININE DIVINE

The Story of Us

Crow Flag

Hail Queens!

Today is the Winter Solstice 2012, the day that the current 26,000-year cycle ends on the Mayan calendar. For years, indigenous spiritual leaders of many cultures have named this date as the beginning of a new cycle of life on Earth.

Some folks have seen this shift as a doomsday apocalypse. And, I am sure that if you are a grumpy, old, white, conservative man, it is. The cycle that is ending is the patriarchy, the oppressive rule of Mars that has left this planet and all living beings suffering from testosterone poisoning.

I choose to see this shift as the re-emergence of the female principle, that power of the Feminine Divine that holds the answers for a balanced, healthy, affirmative, sustainable way of life.

May we all - women, men and children; plants and animals; cosmic energies - join together to create the world that supports our highest potentials.

Best blessings for a Happy New Era!

The Story of Us

I would like to tell you a story. This is a true story. This is our story. Perhaps you remember it.

Let us remember together.

Once upon a time, in the very beginning, in the beginning of the beginning, there was a woman, a single woman, somewhere in the Rift Valley in Africa.

She was the first mother. From her womb waters she birthed the entire human race. To this day, all people everywhere carry her genes.

It is the female of every species - human included - who is capable of producing young. To fashion the stuff of life from our bodies, to bear from our own blood and bone an entirely new generation.

And as if that weren't amazing enough, we manage to manufacture and dispense an abundant supply of mother's milk, the very substance of sustenance, allowing us to continue to nurture our consummate creations.

This awesome procreative potential of women inspired the archetypical spiritual image of a Great Cosmic Mother who gave birth to the Earth and all who dwell upon it.

She bore the skies, the seas, the fertile Earth. The land and oceans are alive with inconceivable multitudes of animals, vegetables and minerals. And the skies teem with Her brilliant creations.

The legends and creation myths of peoples around the globe attest to the universal devotion to this Great Goddess. She was worshipped by women and men alike, throughout most of human existence. Her sacred images and altars abound.

She was, is, and ever will be Mother Nature, Mother Earth.

Do you remember?

The Divine Creative Power of the universe was clearly female. She was revered as the prime creatrix, the giver of all life, the personified ideal of the wise, practical, nurturing powers of women.

And women, in turn, were respected in Her name.

Do you remember?

Earth itself was identified with the Great Goddess, and venerated as Her actual body. Minerals and rocks were seen as Her skeletal system, rivers and streams, Her blood.

The sand, the soil were her skin, and the grasses, Her hair. Hills and mountains defined Her breasts, Her hips, Her belly. The dark caves were Her womb. And the vast seas, Her amniotic fluid, the source of all life.

We identified with the Earth body of the Great Goddess and were empowered by our sympathetic association. We embodied the earthy energy and the watery spirit of the Goddess, and we shared with Her an intimate connection with nature and the natural order of things.

Our power was truly grass roots - grounded deeply in our relationship to the Earth and fed by the underground springs of generative water.

Do you remember?

We made our home on the Earth and we flourished in Her bounty. We walked lightly on the land and studied Mother Nature's ways.

We recognized the cycles of the moon as our own - moved as we were like the ebb and flow of the tides - by its cyclic pull on our own watery depths. We kept track of these predictable lunar changes and of our own moonthly cycles.

And in so doing, we invented time.

Do you remember?

We were observant, curious, creative, organized, efficient and supremely practical. Where there was a need, we found a solution. We were the ultimate Mothers of Invention.

We befriended the flora around us and gained access to their secrets. We learned which parts of which plants tasted the best and would be good for us to eat, and also which harmful ones to avoid.

And in so doing, we invented the culinary arts.

Do you remember?

By combining our power of intuition with our well-honed skills of identification, investigation and experimentation, we discovered the healing properties of plants. From them, we created potions and poultices, which we used in the service of our community.

And in doing so we invented the medical arts.

Do you remember?

Realizing the limitations of gathering only what we could carry in our hands and use immediately, we set out to create containers to hold the food and water that we collected.

And in so doing, we invented craft.

Do you remember?

We had a genius for creating comfort. From the skins of animals, from grass and bark, we made coverings to keep our bodies warm and dry during the day and to sleep in at night.

And in so doing, we invented the domestic arts.

Do you remember?

Being sisters and daughters of Mother Earth, we gloried in Her beauty and emulated Her glory. We decorated our bodies with flowers, leaves, grass, mud, shells, feathers and other trinkets of delight. We gathered together in Her honor and we drummed and chanted and danced our reverence.

And in so doing, we invented ritual.

Surely you remember.

Our vast knowledge and powerful wisdom was sought and prized. We were solid and steady, secure in our esteemed station. We were the clan mothers, the shamans, the natural leaders whose moral force was the guiding principle of the people.

Do you remember? Please remember.

The ancient Great Mother Goddess and the universal sovereignty of feminine wisdom expanded and evolved through the ages, creating, nurturing and domesticating the planet, making a myriad of slow changes toward easing life.

Change was glacial, an ever so gradual accrual of adaptation, innovation, improvement, refinement - one need and one solution at a time.

For tens upon tens of millennia, the creative, inventive, innovative power of women streamed slowly through time and circumstance, shaping human life on Earth like the steady, persistent flow of water that molded the geography of Mother Earth, Herself. Little by little. Drop by drop.

And then it rained!

Do you remember?

About 10,000 years ago, the ice began to retreat. The air warmed and the fertile rains came, dousing the Earth and arousing the dormant seeds, calling them to life. Wild grasses covered the land and gave forth a profusion of tasty, nourishing seeds.

And again, once upon a time, there was a woman, a single woman, this time she was in the Middle East. Remember, this is a true story. This woman - historians call her the "Farm Mother" - made the connection between the earth, the seed, the rain and the barley. So she planted some seeds.

And in doing so she invented agriculture.

And this single act by this single woman gave birth to civilization in what is referred to by historians as the Fertile Crescent, the Cradle of Civilization.

Cultivation led to culture.

Farming freed us from the endless, exhausting search for food. Agriculture established a stable, abundant, peaceful and vital environment for growth -  a virtual petri dish teeming with creative energy, which produced stunning conceptual and cultural advancements.

From the beginning, we were nomadic, carrying our provisions and our shelter with us or searching it out it as we roamed. It wasn't easy, always being on the move - setting up and packing up constantly, being exposed to the weather and predators, lifting and schlepping. All the while looking for something to eat.

Farming meant that we could settle down, put down roots like the wild plants that we cultivated. Staying in one place and planting food allowed us to grow more than we could ever gather.

Now we could feed more folks and safely store surplus supplies for a secure tomorrow. We brought our clans together, built permanent dwellings and developed communities, which grew, and grew ever more concentrated and complex.

Settled village life created an increased need for more organization, for specialized and effective tools, and for stronger, more durable implements. Necessity is the Mother of Invention, so we set about to develop what we needed.

And in so doing, we invented technology, science and the arts.

Individuals developed specialized skills and traded their work for what they needed. Neighboring villages reached out to each other for the purpose of exchanging local resources, crops, goods and services, as well as social interaction.

Hence, the birth of commerce.

Up until this time, it had never been a priority to account for the number of things, as we acquired very little. And if counting were ever required, we used our fingers. But now, efficient farming, trade and governance necessitated an organized, permanent method of keeping records, of keeping track.

Hence, the birth of numerical systems and mathematics.

Our communication had always been literally word of mouth. We passed on information through stories, songs and old wives' tales, shared in intimate settings, in small gatherings. But if we were going to be able to communicate over miles and stretches of time we would need a codified symbolic system of notation to transmit and transcribe information.

Hence, the birth of writing.

All of these amazing inventions and advancements grew from those first seeds planted by the Farm Mother.

Life was good for the women, men and children in these early Neolithic communities, and it continued to be so for some 5000 years.

This was the height and the glory of the reign of the Great Cosmic Mother Goddess and Her dynamic daughters here on Earth, who, as the creators of life and discoverers of agriculture, possessed considerable spiritual and economic power, which we apparently exercised with equanimity.

There is no archeological evidence that indicates any abuse of that power within society, nor of any organized aggression aimed at others. No weapons. No fortifications. It was a golden era - the original Garden of Eden - egalitarian, peaceful, prosperous and reverent.

Do you remember?

Do you remember our skills, our prowess, our power, our pride?

Do you remember what life could be like?

Life was indeed good. But not too good to be true. This is a true story, remember. This is Her story. This is our story.

And then, like in any riveting story, something happened. Something big. Something scary. Around 6000 years ago something cataclysmic happened and it happened globally.

Suddenly there was an extraordinary shift in consciousness in civilizations all over the planet, resulting in the widespread changeover from a Goddess-centered, Earth-oriented, circular spirituality to the male-dominated worship of hierarchical and vengeful father sky gods brandishing bolts of lightening and threatening destruction.

Why did this happen? What caused this abrupt and disruptive shift? Historians, archeologists, anthropologists, geologers, climatologists speculate as to the cause. Theories abound, but no one really knows for sure.

What is certain is that violence reared its ugly head for the first time and loosed a terrifying turmoil on the flourishing agricultural settlements.

The Universal beneficent Great Mother Goddess was overtaken, overwhelmed, over-ruled and overthrown by aggressive male deities and hordes of their weapon-wielding minions.

The feminine-guided centers of civilization were caught unaware and completely unprepared. There was nothing in our collective experience that could possibly have predicted the invading horse-mounted hooligans bearing down from the unknown northern territories.

Who among these peaceful, progressive, weaponless peoples could have imagined the swashbucklers from hell, slashing their blades, flashing their gods forcefully in all directions, like cutting winds, frigid enough to freeze the soul?

When the cultures clashed, the Great Goddess did not just roll over and die. She put up a damn good fight. She sized up the situation, rolled up Her sleeves, tied back Her hair, stuck out Her tits and challenged, "Make my day!"

Inspired, Her determined Amazon priestesses armed themselves and defended our way of life as best they could. But when the bloody battle was done, the Great Goddess was deposed, denied, denounced and deflowered. Desecrated, decimated, defamed, defeated.

And women everywhere fared no better. Our primacy and power was threatened and thwarted. Diminished, ridiculed, ignored and abused, the dynamic spirit of women was driven deep underground. The feminine wisdom waters were dynamited and dammed.

The tide had turned.

Under the cruel rule of the conquerors, and without the leavening balance of the feminine sensibility, our once synergistic civilizations became greedy and cynical, perverting a nature-centered empowerment into bully power used for exploitation and the amass of ever-more power.

History attests to this conquest, and myths the world-over tell of the subjugation of the feminine forces and the enforcement of male dominion. These new stories no longer spoke of creation, celebration or communion, but rather relayed accountings of invasion, war, rape, pillage, kings and endless battles.

History, after all, is His Story and written from the point of view of the victor.

But like in any story, there are two sides here. And we women have our own version of what happened.

The Great Goddess might have been down, She was not, however, definitively out. She gathered Her strengths, Her endurance, Her resourcefulness and resolve, and She joined the women's underground where She became a guerrilla general, and we, Her ambassadors.

Even during the darkest of times, there have been notable exceptions to the reign of Mars - exceptional women leaders, active and effective healers, writers, teachers. Daredevils and queens, innovators and agitators - worthy sheroes of every stripe who drank from the deep wells of precious female potency and were emboldened by it - many facing cruel consequences for their passion and purpose.

But these occasional inspirational examples aside, most of us succumbed to the considerable pressures of male dominated society and we obeyed the oppressive strictures - often under extreme duress.

Repressed, suppressed, depressed, we were subdued, and for the most part, we submitted. We sublimated our dreams and desires and went to sleep or became automatons, Stepford wives, suicides.

And we have been half asleep, languishing in a lethargic hypnotic trance state, for some 600 centuries now, our awesome once-upon-a-time connection to the female source of power, all but forgotten. But not completely.

In this story, this true story, our story, we are not waiting around for a prince to awaken us with a kiss. We will shake off the stupor, wipe the sleep from our eyes, and we will rise of our own volition.

The power that we were forced to swallow has been growing in the dark all these thousands of years. Like germinating seeds, sustained by the still waters of spirit and some profound cellular memory of those first seeds, we have been gathering our energy, gearing up, getting ready to sprout: To bud. To flower. To fruit. To bear the seeds of our souls.

Are we not the daughters of the same foremother, the daughters of the same Mother Earth, the daughters of the eternal Feminine Divine? We are made of sturdy stuff.

Today, women everywhere are emerging from the cocoons of our mass amnesia, poised on the verge of our vital breakthrough. Able, willing and finally ready to push our impatient shoots through all the restrictions, the abuses, the debasements and the glass ceilings, so that we can once again grow to our full potential.

Resolute, we are like running water. We persevere, pushing past all boundaries that would inhibit our infinite possibility.

Now is the time for us to embrace our stature and to exercise our impressive strength. It is time to reclaim our rightful duties as inventors, creators, planners, organizers, leaders and visionaries.

It is high time to speak our truth, to walk our talk and to put our money where our mouth is. We have held back long enough. There is too much at stake. We have the whole world in our hands.

It's time. It's our time. It's about time. And it's just in time.

Just as the planet teeters on the very brink of disaster, here we are, an awake, aware, engaged and purposeful multitude of women - fiery, accomplished, clever, ambitious women - prepared to whip it right back into shape.

And we are just the gals to do it. Women everywhere are stepping into our personal sovereignty. We are Self-aware, Self-directed, Self-assured, Self-fulfilling Queens, each reigning in our own domain, proud to be the ruler of our own life.

And once empowered, we are reaching out to other capable Queens in ever-wider networks in order to join and direct our collective energy and expertise toward creating a way of life that is once again informed and guided by feminine principles and female points of view.

And in so doing, we are once again - at this very moment on this magical White Night - giving birth to civilization.

A new yet ancient kind of civil civilization based on partnership, shared community, equality, inclusion, collaboration, shared resources and values and mutual support - an ethos that engenders a dynamic balance of both feminine and masculine qualities within all people and throughout all cultures, institutions and societies.

If we, the mighty Queens, bring to bear the amazing experience, understanding and acumen that we have to share, we can together restore balance and bring healing to ourselves, each other and our world.

Let us harness our impressive energy: our purity of purpose, our passion, our heartfelt compassion and our enormous power, and let us direct it toward creating a safe, sane, sustainable, sublime and peaceful world for us all. The future is in our very capable hands.

A Creed for Free Women

A Creed for Free Women

(*and such men as feel happy with it.)

I am.

I am from and of The Mother.

I am as I am.

Wilfully harming none, none may question me.

As no free-growing tree serves another or requires to be served.

As no lion or lamb or mouse is bound or binds,

No plant or blade of grass nor ocean fish,

So I am not here to serve or be served.

I am Child of every Mother,

Mother of each daughter,

Sister of every woman,

And lover of whom I choose or chooses me.

Together or alone we dance Her Dance,

We do the work of The Mother,

She we have called Goddess for human comprehension.

She, the Source, never-to-be-grasped Mystery,

Terrible Cauldron, Womb,

Spinning out of her the unimaginably small

And the immeasurably vast -

Galaxies, worlds, flaming suns -

And our Earth, fertile with her beneficence,

Here, offering tenderest flowers.

(Yet flowers whose roots may split rock.)

I, we, Mothers, Sisters, Lovers,

Infinitely small out of her vastness,

Yet our roots too may split rock,

Rock of the rigid, the oppressive

In human affairs.

Thus is She

And being of Her

Thus am I.

Powered by Her,

As she gives, I may give,

Even of my blood and breath:

But none may require it;

And none may question me.

I am.

I am That I am.

Letters In Response to the November 2012 Issue

Your comments made me laugh...I live on Long Island in Freeport on the water in a co-op and my place was flooded and demolished during Hurricane Sandy by water, gasoline and sewage. The fury of the water surge was totally directed at my beautiful place on the water. For 3 weeks all I have done is "toss it"...everything is gone... down to the floor, walls, kitchen, bath, clothes, furniture, shoes - much was lost to the waters - Ok with the loss and now I am moving forward in rebuilding mode but unfortunately this is going to take a lot longer than I had ever anticipated. Glad that I was able to chuckle at your comments about tossing. Blessings,

- Mary, NY

"The ruling 'powers that be' are rapidly becoming the powers that were. And the voices of reason, tolerance, and reverence are on the rise. All hail to the ascendance of the Feminine Divine."

Thank you for creating The Queen's Chronicles. I just wasn't ready to be a crone. Still so much to do. So much to learn! And this newsletter has so much inspiration!

And we are glad to so. It is a joy and a privilege to share in the fortune of another woman. I recently heard Oprah say the saddest thing ever - "The hardest thing about being successful is having someone to be glad for you."

It takes a centered and confident Queen to break that pattern. There are 60 million thrones out there. One for each of us. There is plenty of purpose, passion and power for us all. May we use it well!

Prayer requests:

Dear Ones,

Kaylin Keith and Linda Shaw's home has been severely damaged by fire. This comes just two weeks after Kaylin was hospitalized with clots in her lungs and legs. Her health is still very fragile and now the third floor of their home caught fire and was badly damaged. They are unable to pay for a hotel space as their funds are depleted from the costs incurred during her hospitalization and lack of income.Their home has no heat or power and will be uninhabitable for at least several weeks while repairs are made.

I am appealing to the community for donations to a Chip In account I created for their use to help them get through this trauma. There is a home across the street that they can move to temporarily, but they need money to turn on electric, clean it and move necessities. Their animals are temporarily at the vet for safekeeping. Please help any way you can. During this holiday season there are few who are in as much need as our sisters, who are vulnerable and suffering.  You can donate by using this link to a Chip In account I set up for them.

All prayers are much needed and appreciated. Peace,

- Pam, PA

Dear Mama Donna,

Please include my daughter Anna Eskenazi Bush in your healing circle. She has a problem with her thyroid and also Epstein Barr. Many thanks.
