"I am now half way through your book The Queen of My Self and without doubt, I am finding it to be the best book of its kind I have ever read. You are blessed with such a wonderful warmth and easy flow that your book is a joy to read. Thank you for your inspiration and the four-fold goddess. When you spoke of her I could see Her clearly in my minds' eye. All this time She had been there but with Her back to me, waiting. Suddenly She turned and I recognized Her at once. I feel a connection with Her that I have never felt before. Blessings,"

Hail Queens!
What a month! A super hurricane, a tropical storm, a nail-biting election. And two eclipses. Lots of drama, lots of trauma and loss, and also lots of great gains, acts of courage and generosity. For years I have been writing about our precarious position on this planet. "What will it take?" I ask again and again. Well, I guess it takes paralyzing 800 miles and millions and millions of people in the nation's most populous centers, not to mention the Holy Grail stock exchange. This time Mother Nature made sure to make Herself heard. I choose to think that these furious storms have served as purifying agents, challenging us as individuals and as society at large to jettison our cynical attitudes about women, the environment, the economy, equality, harmony, and change. Out with the old! If it no longer fits nor serves any positive purpose, if it ceased to be flattering decades ago, toss it! This clearing was reflected in the national elections. The women have spoken! And we were joined in our judgment by a huge majority of other heretofore marginalized folks. The ruling "powers that be" are rapidly becoming the powers that were. And the voices of reason, tolerance, and reverence are on the rise. All hail to the ascendance of the Feminine Divine,
|
What does that mean? Women who openly display their power, knowledge, and skill, receiving public recognition and honor. But also females who manage to wield power in societies that try to limit it or decree female submission; where their leadership is stigmatized and their creativity disdained. And women who resist and overthrow oppressive traditions and regimes. Who break The Rules in defiance of unjust legal and religious "authorities." Who pursue their vision in spite of the personal cost. Women have determined the course of events and the forms of human culture. We originated, founded, governed, prophesied, created great art, fought for our rights, and for our peoples. These are the women edited out of history, their stories omitted, distorted, and replaced with an endless litany of men (and the occasional queen or meddling concubine). Our ignorance of these women is greatly compounded by the omission of information on societies, which accorded females power in public life, diplomacy, religion, medicine, the arts as well as family structure and inheritance. Both racism and sexism are implicated in these silences and gaps. - Max Dashu, Founder of the Suppressed Histories Archives

Dedicated to Our Great Work in the world, and The Cosmic Cowgirls We are a tribe of truth tellers. Revolution makers. Movers and shakers of things that need moving and shaking. Like hips. And old ideas that need shaking off. We are a gathering of women who straddle the worlds. We have one bare foot on the earth?(toenails painted sparkly of course) and one cowgirl boot in the marketplace of life. With our heads in the stars for big dreaming and our arms outstretched to embrace as much aliveness as we can. We have our hearts on our sleeves, both of them. Whether we be sinners or saints or wear halos or horns there is one thing you have to admit about us.... We agree... Be the most you that you can be. Be your own revolution while being a part of the collective one. We believe this truth to be self evident: That each woman can transform her life into a legend. That stories are made for telling around the campfire, but legends are meant to be lived. And sisterhoods are meant to be your bridge when you don't know the way over the troubled water of the lies you have been told and tell yourself still. Here we know what women are worth and we tell you what we know of our ancient and future wisdom. We have been gathering the stories of our grandmothers and grandfathers about birth and death and transformation that have been lost. We will not allow them to be lost again. We are carrying scrolls of wisdom across the planet so that thousands of hands hold these legends and it will not be lost from us like it was before. This is where women come to gather the bones and sing their whole self back together again. We believe there is medicine, sacred and true in community that comes with the territory of belonging. Of being a part of that which is bigger then you. And me. A place where the collective soul can unfurl her bright wings and together we can fly in a future that reflects who we are and what we care about. And in closing I must give you a Warning - if you enter Cosmic Cowgirl Territory there is no way your wild woman will keep herself contained. Beware of shifting stories and old ideas falling away. Beware of taking up space that might make others uncomfortable around you. Beware of no longer being willing to live a life that does not reflect who you are. This is dangerous territory. Welcome. Your cup of revolutionary tea is waiting for you. - Shiloh Sophia McCloud, CA |

Letters In Response to the October 2012 Issue
One of the all-time best, Donna! You speak so eloquently for all of us. Thank you, thank you. This is such an important election for women. We cannot afford to lose.
- Sherli, CA
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I needed to hear what you said about protest. I almost believed I was on the fringe. You are a role model for me. I thank you with all of my heart. From one goddess to another,
- Shareane, NY
You are so right. This is the time for change. BIG change and we can make that happen if we just show up. We voted and we won. We can do more. Let us do more!
- Jill, OR
Thank so much for sharing the powerful messages from Yoko Ono and Alice Walker. Your own words were powerfully moving, as well. The Queen's Chronicles never fails to inspire me.
- Barbara, VA
Once again you lit a fire in my heart, Queen Donna. I promise to protest and speak up for what I believe!
- Geraldine, NS, Canada
Your message resonates deeply with me. One could not help but be cognizant of the Living Power of the Elements during these stormy displays of the Terrible Mother. Then, the election, which I dreaded, became a decided victory for Women. My sense/intuition was/is that the back of the White Patriarchy has been broken. Could it be? Yes, it could. Something's coming, Something Good! Blessings,
- SusanMerrie, NY
Loved this! Peace.
- Elayne, PA
Hooray, women! We won the day! Thanks for your words of inspiration.
- Lesley, ME
I've been meaning to write to you for a month or so. Some- thing fascinating is happening in my practice and I want you to know about it. Today I recommended The Queen of My Self, yet again, but ... and this is the departure, I find that I am recommending it to younger and younger women. Today, she was 37. The other day 42. In the past 2 months, it's probably been 8 women, all younger than 45. I think the rebalance of polarity on 12/21/12 is shifting everyone toward more balance. Younger women are wanting their sovereignty earlier, and I wanted you to know.
- Susan, MA
Letters in Response to the Harvest Moon Special Issue
As a "child poet" myself, I truly related to your story. Congratulations on such a wondrous adventure into self- discovery at such a tender age! Beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
- Jessica, BC, Canada
I think the narrative you shared about answering to the moon has been my favorite of everything you've shared so far. It was an inspiring message on a Monday morning. Thank you for sharing it, and I think it was a good reminder that the moon never stops calling if you're brave enough to answer.
- Kristin, NY
Loved, loved, loved your story about the moon, your girlish daring, and your poem!!!! It is so wonderful that you allowed yourself to have that experience and what a road it put you on! Ah, the moon.... I have always had a connection, sometimes literally physically, to the moon. As a girl I snuck out of the house late at night to play in the light of the moon. The exhilaration of racing full tilt on my bicycle in the moonlight was worth the risk of getting caught. As a teenager, I continued to sneak out to play, but this involved some other mischief that was probably not in my best interest. However, the journey home under the moonlight was always magical. There were many times in my life that I would wake in the night to find the full moon shining on my belly and like a lightning bolt, a cramp would come and my period would begin. I believe I called my first child into the world with the moon's help. When I felt we were both fully ready to meet each other I went outside into the light of the full moon, stripped naked, bathed fully (no place on my swollen body was left untouched by the moonlight), and within 24 hours I was holding my sweet baby boy. That boy is now 23 years old, yet the pull of the moon is something I still cannot ignore. While it no longer calls forth my monthly blood, I find myself standing as if in a trance, staring up at the moon's beauty. It is as if time is standing still and there is nothing in the universe but the moon and myself. Lunatic moments that I hope will continue as long as I do.
- Queen Adeline, CA
You, my dear, had the courage and wisdom to walk fully into your power to reveal the truth as a young child. Neil Armstrong had not the courage to walk into his. A burial at sea cannot hide the truth of our existence as a celestial community. It took a girl to be the brave one. Mahalo nui loa from us all.
- Cynthia, HI
Thank you for sharing this. I love that you had the courage to listen to the calling of your inner voice at such a young age...right in the middle of the Leave It To Beaver fifties. You were truly ahead of your time. Right now at 58, I feel like that little girl you describe. Here it is a full moon. And I have had to follow my inner callings and do something I never thought I would be able to do. To send my one and only beloved 17-year old son out of the house and into the wilderness. We had him taken at 4 AM in the morning to a treatment program in northern Utah. I truly connected with a fierce, powerful force inside of me in order to do what I never imagined for the greater good of my son. But now, I am exhausted and processing such grief. Please send prayers and again, thank you for sharing your wise and beautiful truth. With gratitude for all the illuminating wisdom you share.
- Wendi, CA
Absolutely exquisite Donna....what a magnificent story....powerful....vivid......incantatory...like you!
- Judyth, Mexico
Thank you so much for sharing this. What a wonderful remembered experience. I know that our moon received this lovely energy from a grown-up little girl - such a different thing than a plain old grown up! Maybe the moon is using this kind of love energy to heal Herself from all of the crazy assaults that man has visited upon her. I like to think so. And if so, then it encourages me and other moon-lovers to send our favorite moon all the love we can whenever we can. You are such an inspiration! Regaliciously,
- Queen Delight, NJ

ENGLAND
The Invitation:
Celebration of Midlife
Saturday, 20th October, 2012
Tina Free, Priestess of Avalon will guide us through a wonderful, female-centric journey of reflection and thanksgiving for the gifts that life brings us, whatever our age.
Followed by enjoyment of the Autumn Evening with fabulous vegetarian refreshments.
When I was approaching my 50th birthday, I felt a deep yearning to explore with close friends and family, the significance of this time of life. I have been attending the Glastonbury Goddess Conference (England) for about 7 years, and one year I attended Queen Donna Henes' workshop "The Queen of My Self," which has had a lasting impact on me. I knew in my heart and soul that I wanted to be able to share some of the wisdom that I had the privilege to witness at these conferences, with women and men who were important to me.
Most of my many friends and family had not experienced Goddess Spirituality before and were very curious, if not a little nervous, about the ceremony!
I worked with a fabulous priestess, Tina Free, to plan a ceremony, which focused on the 8 directions and their significance to our lives. We used an altar to portray this.
At Imbolc (the winter halfway point) represented by the Goddess Brigit or Bridie, we asked participants to recall memories of being young, and to privately acknowledge relatives and loved ones with us and no longer with us. One of my own favourite memories is the birthday cake my Mum used to bake. So I asked her to bake one for the ceremony and we all shared a piece of her cake in honour of our childhoods. Lovely!
At the point of Summer Solstice, a time of high productivity we anointed people with ceremonial oil with the help of my nieces. I had blended the oils to imbue strength, grounding, moving forward and self-love, some of the qualities required to help us move forward into the new spring of our lives at midlife. The Summer Solstice segment of the altar was dressed with shells and water in honour of Domnu, Mother of Water.
At the end of the ceremony, we shared a fabulous vegetarian feast. Friends spoke about how moving they found the ceremony and about how they had been made to feel comfortable and involved! The ceremony was in the garden of my partner's house and I would like to thank him for his generosity and spirit. The weather was mild and we had a wonderful sunset as a backdrop.
