Setting Up the Show
It's Author-Loaded

Nearly 100 authors will grace the newly-renovated Portland Airport Holiday Inn for the 2013 PNBA Tradeshow, October 6-8.

New lobby, new event rooms, new restaurant, new guest rooms--even a new pool. And, still, we've managed to guarantee you a room for just $99 per night--with wi-fi and parking!

It's time for you to register and book your room. For encouragement, here's a teaser of some of just what--who--is in store.

Sunday, at Education Day's end, enjoy a casual dinner buffet with three Northwest legends. Ivan Doig, Jane Kirkpatrick and Barry Lopez take the stage

With Monday morning comes the first Book and Author Breakfast, with Elizabeth George, Nicola Griffith, Brandon Sanderson and Cynthia Voigt.

Monday night's Author Feast presents, to name just a few, Tara Conklin, Peter Brown Hoffmeister, David Laskin, Lauren Myracle and Willy Vlautin.

Tuesday morning, wake up to breakfast with Jeffery Deaver, Brian Doyle, Loren Long and Marissa Meyer.

Seriously, what are you waiting for?
Tradeshow Education Bonus
Special Paz & Associates Workshop

Bookstore marketing gurus Donna Paz and Mark Kaufman are coming to the Holiday Inn at the Portland Airport on Saturday, October 5th, the day before the PNBA fall show, to present an all-day workshop for booksellers titled Planning Your Bookstore's Next Chapter: What Buyers Look for and Sellers Need to Know.

Paz and Associates have successfully produced this program at other regional meetings to provide booksellers nearing retirement the opportunity to learn about their options for transition, including experiences from other booksellers who have done it successfully.

Holiday Catalog Orders Almost Due
Store Campaign Details Due Next Wednesday!

August 21 is the deadline for stores to turn in in-store and insertion orders as well as imprint art.

In 2012 participating stores reported the highest sales figures in the last ten years of the campaign!

And this year, we'll even give you an additional penny back on each imprinted catalog you send out to your customers and your community. That's right, your PNBA Board of Directors approved a three cent reimbursement, so the numbers are already looking good for stores.

Get your details together and your order form filled ASAP!

And here's a little info on our catalog theme title for this year. What the Heart Knows: Chants, Charms, and Blessings is a collection of poems from Newbery Honor Medalist Joyce Sidman and illustrated by Caldecott Honor-winning artist Pamela Zagarenski.

Here's what publisher, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has to say: "What the Heart Knows: Chants, Charms, and Blessings is a collection of poems to provide comfort, courage, and humor at difficult or daunting moments in life. It conjures forth laments, spells, invocations, chants, blessings, promises, songs, and charms... These words help us remember or grieve; they bolster courage and guard against evil; they help us celebrate and give thanks."

Here's a look at some of Zagarenski's recent work. Phenomenal.

Recent Site Highlights
*  Kids can leave the sleeping bags at home for these poison oak-free summer camps at Third Place Books and Village Books.

*  James Crossley and family enjoy the wilderness, both under a tent and between the covers of a book. Read the the latest edition of A Cup of News
*  Find out how Bellingham author Julie Trimingham went from painter to screenplay writer and, finally, novelist in her conversation with Lindsey McGuirk.
*  Here's a Dear Reader educational rant about Amazon's indie-undermining discounts and the President in the parking lot farce. As if we hadn't had enough, just a couple of days later came the news that Bezos purchased the Washington Post! Give us a break, dude.

 *  Experience a beautiful day at the theater that the bookshop can be in John W. Marshall's Bookstore Double Feature, alternately titled by the author, "A Couplet Walks Into The Store."
*  NWBL needs more Face Outs like this one from Arlene at Watermark Book Company!
Banned Books Week in a Box
Courtesy of ABFFE and Ingram Content Group

From the August 8 edition of Bookselling This Week: "In an effort to make it easy for booksellers to celebrate Banned Books Week--which takes place from September 22 to 28 this year--The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) today announced a collaboration with Ingram Content Group.

As a result of this partnership, booksellers can order titles with additional discounts through Ingram from a list of more than 120 titles assembled by ABFFE. For the first 150 qualifying orders, Ingram will also deliver a promotional kit on behalf of the ABFFE that contains everything a bookseller would need to assemble a Banned Books Week display."

Ideas That Work
Inklings Finds a Winner

This customer note comes from Yakima's Inklings Bookshop in the August edition of the store's newsletter, The Inkspot.

Have you signed up yet for our Friends of Inklings Loyalty program? After many years and many requests from you, we started our new program in May. I bought a little cardboard file box and thought we would take some months to fill it. Was I ever surprised! By the end of May we had 1000 customers signed up and we've now moved into a vintage, four-drawer wooden card catalog!

It only takes about a minute to sign up, so don't miss out on all the fun! We write your pre-tax purchase amount on the card each time you buy anything at Inklings. After six purchases, we average those amounts and give you 5% back in store credit. Also at that time, we give you a bright, shiny red custom Inklings bag and when you bring it in to the shop on any fifth Saturday (August and November are the next months with fifth Saturdays) you will get 20% off everything you can fit in the bag on that day.

So, sign up today! We appreciate each one of you!
