The entire Steering Committee and I wish you a Happy and Healthy New Year.

I want to welcome Barbara Alpern as the Vice Chair of the NYC Chapter. She comes with extraordinary management and administrative experience. As important, she has enormous enthusiasm and cares deeply about the success and progress of our Chapter. A member for two years, she worked on the Program and Caring Collaborative committees, and chairs the Peer Group committee.

And I want to welcome Karen Merson, also a member for two years. Karen has assumed the Vice Chair position for the Peer Group committee, with primary responsibility for the Transition Peer Groups.  Karen, co-founder of New Attitude, a coaching practice for women transitioning into their third act, was formerly a full time professor at The New School University and a consultant in organizational change.

This newsletter focuses on Peer Groups, a signature benefit of membership in TTN.  With new groups forming and tons of open groups, it is a good time to provide background information that describes how Peer Groups work and the process of joining or creating a group.

Of course, we welcome questions and comments - our job is to make your peer group experience a joyful and rewarding one. Please feel free to contact Karen ([email protected]) regarding Transition Peer Groups, and Barbara ([email protected]) regarding Special Interest Groups.

Warmest regards,
Eileen Kobrin
All About Peer Groups

What is a Peer Group, and  Why Should I Join One?Why_PeerGroups
Peer Groups are created by and for TTN members to explore issues of mutual interest. These groups meet in informal, interactive settings that
enable participants to discover new connections and opportunities. The NYC Chapter offers two types of Peer Groups: Transition Peer Groups (TPGs) and Special Interest Groups (SIGs). NOTE: You must be a  TTN member to participate.

Why should I join a TPG or SIG?
  • To explore new ideas and educational opportunities
  • To be part of  a warm, welcoming and open community
  • To have a safe and confidential space to share your thoughts and concerns
  • To meet and form friendships with women who share your interests and passions

What is a Transition Peer Group (TPG)?

SIGs often start with one woman with a passion seeking someone with whom to share it. There are groups that discuss books, go to movies, attend the theater, opera, walk together, dine out, cook in, travel, discuss politics and current events, or photography, or financial matters, or dating... the list goes on. Since many SIGs meet in members' homes, space may be limited, and they fill up quickly.
How To Join a SIGHow_to_Join_SIG

If you are a TTN member...
Click here for detailed information about open SIGs, and email the contact person listed.  You will need to enter your user id and password.  If you're interested in a topic that isn't listed here, or if you have any questions about SIGs, contact Barbara Alpern ([email protected]).

If you are NOT a TTN member...
You can see brief descriptions of the available SIGs by Clicking Here.  For information about joining TTN,  contact Marti Madory at [email protected].

To Join a Book Group...
When you review the list of Open SIGs, you may notice that there are no book groups listed.  Book groups tend to be small and fill up very quickly.  If you're interested in joining a book group, contact Mary Cargill ([email protected]).  She will help you find one or add you to the list of women interested in starting a new one.
2015 Highlights of Special Interest GroupsHighlights

The Superior Food Group dines at high end restaurants once a month.  Members have enjoyed incredible dinners at such great restaurants as
Le Bernardin, La Grenouille and Daniel, to name just a
few. What fun it is to take a break from your everyday life to dine in the lap of luxury!

Travel Mates is a newly formed group of women who are looking to travel with others.  Although the group was formed only recently, several members have already planned a March trip to Charleston, SC.  After this pilot trip, who knows where they'll go next!

Culture Mavens is a network of women who reach out to each other when they are looking for a companion to attend a cultural event. Group members share plans to go to events such as theater, music, dance, cabaret, comedy clubs, films, and museums so that other members can join them. As an example, one member bought a subscription to a few Roundabout Theater plays, notified the group and seven other women joined her for the performances and some delicious meals!
MISSING IN ACTION - Transition Peer GroupsMissing

The Peer Group Committee is in the process of updating its database. We have not heard from some Transition Peer Groups in quite a while.  If you belong to one of these groups, or know someone who does, please contact Barbara Alpern ([email protected]), Peer Groups Co-chair.

The groups we are seeking are: Betwixty, Eclectics, Expanding Horizons, Navigating the Single Life, Paradigm, Super Tuesdays, Tertulia, Three "W's",
To Be Continued, Trustees, and Visionaries.

A hearty THANKS to TTNers who donated books at our annual holiday luncheon from Maris Goodstein, Executive Director, Reading Partners

On behalf of Reading Partners New York, I want to sincerely thank you for such a generous book donation to our program. The books donated from TTN will go directly onto shelves in the reading centers at our 17 schools across the city, and into the hands of 920 students. They will become a part of our Read Aloud libraries, as well as a part of our Take Reading Home initiative to build literacy in the home. It has been such a pleasure to work with your organization, and we look forward to continuing to work with you in the future!

Best,
Maris Goodstein, Executive Director, Reading Partners New York
