Two TTN Chapters IMPACTing Their Communites

This fall two TTN chapters have taken IMPACT as a personal mission to help their communities.   In Philadelphia, TTN Members came together for a clothing drive to benefit Career Wardrobe. The chapter engaged 10 TTN volunteers in three different locations to accept donations from over 40 contributors (TTN members, friends and family.)  Career Wardrobe's mission is "to empower women in transition by providing programs that inspire the confidence necessary to achieve self-sufficiency and pursue a productive career."  Through their efforts this fall, TNN Philadelphia was able to help service the 5,000 women who are entering the work force this year.

Further up north on Long Island, TTN members collaborated for a Children's Book Drive to benefit children who live in shelters and foster homes on Long Island.  This drive is in conjunction with their ongoing Pajama Program which provides many children with their first pair of pajama.  Our members believe that "the more books we donate, the more children who will read, the more they will learn, the more successful they will be," and we couldn't agree with them more!

Congratulations to both of these chapters demonstrating the power of IMPACT for TTN Members everywhere!
The Purpose Prize: Nominate Someone You Know Who is Making an IMPACT!

Do you know someone who is a 'creative problem solver over the age of 60, who best exemplifies the encore spirit, and has demonstrated the energy and passion to apply their decades of hard-won experience, wisdom and skills to solving some of the world's toughest problems?'  Then nominate them for the 2015 Purpose Prize!

Each year Encore.org receives nominations for seniors who have made an IMPACT in their 'encore' or second career 'changing the world in what was once seen as their 'left over years.'  The 2015 Purpose Prize for Future Promise, Sponsored by Symetra, of $100,000 will be given to the individual 'who is making extraordinary  contributions in his or her encore career.'  Six additional prizes, sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation and The Atlantic Philanthropies, of $25,000 will also be given to exceptional individuals.  This past year, Encore was excited to announce two new Purpose Prizes - The MetLife Foundation is the sponsor of the Purpose Prize for Financial Inclusion and The Eisner Foundation is the sponsor of the Purpose Prize for Intergenerational Impact.  To read about and view videos of the 2014 Purpose Prize recipients, click here.

Past winners include Vicki Thomas, winner of the Purpose Prize for Future Promise and $100,000.  Ms. Thomas is a 67 year old woman who "rallies communities around wounded soldiers, providing them with adapted foreclosed homes that improve quality of life for veterans and whole communities alike."  Babara Young winner of $25,000  is a 66 year old woman who transitioned from 'immigrant nanny' to 'advocate' for 'domestic workers' rights.'

If you know an exceptional individual over 60, show them your appreciation by nominating them for the prestigious Purpose Prize. For more details click the link below.

Grandchildren? This Baby Boomer says, 'No, Thank You.'
~ Nancy Wurtzel

Over wine and dinner recently my best friend told me she and her husband will soon have another grandchild, their sixth. My friend is excited, and she can't wait to learn if it is boy or girl and what name the parents will choose. When baby arrives, there will be a shower with gifts of soft blankets, tiny outfits and colorful, tactile toys. I'm delighted for my friend. I love her children, their spouses and their passel of children. Watching their infants grow  into toddlers and on into childhood is fun and often wildly entertaining. I'm always grateful when my friend and her family include me in celebrations of weddings, baby showers, birthdays, family gatherings and more. I enjoy being there, but at the end of the day, I'm always happy to say goodbye and return home. Home to my books, music, writing and the adorable puppy I adopted a few months ago. I am happy to be home and happy to be grandchildless.

An Update from the SF Bay Area Chapter about the TTN Ambassador Program!
~
TTNer Elena Ylundain visited NYC and took advantage of the TTN Ambassador Program.  Below is an email she wrote to Nancy Hawes about her experience.

"Before my visit to New York City in September I contacted Sherry Dworsky, one of TTN's NYC Ambassadors.  I had several questions that I felt could best be answered by a local woman in the TTN age range.  Sherry responded immediately and put me in touch with another member, Harriet Flehinger, who is a Big Apple Greeter.  It was too late to book a walking tour, but Harriet supplied me with a wealth of recommendations that only a local (who's not trying to sell you something) could provide.  Sherry offered to meet me for coffee/lunch. What a great resource!"
