"Trust the Venue" - Andy Frasco and the U.N. this Friday
By Ray
As Tom Ptak says in many of his introductions, "Trust the Venue!" In our first show after our summer break, we invite you to come see Andy Frasco and the United Nations. This is Andy's first time here, and I have a feeling it will not be his last. 5 pieces... 5 great musicians!
With Griffin House sold out in September and Slaid Cleaves almost sold out for October, this could be the only show we have tickets available for until November. We try not to host many summertime shows because they can be really hard to sell with all the summer activities going on. I just felt I could not let Andy pass through without having him play here. His show is this Friday. Very soon, school will start along with Friday night football. Plus, taxes are due, so give yourself a break and join us. We have plenty of tickets available for this Friday....at least for now.
As far as "trusting our venue," a dozen of the artists that have played here have appeared on the likes of Lettermen, Leno, Kimmel and Conan. Just the other day, I was reading the Wall Street Journal and there it was, a half page article on Slaid Cleaves and his new release. Some of these appearances by our artists came before they played here, and some came after. While they might not be able to sell out Soldier Field, many of them are national acts. Now Andy may not be a household name, but perhaps someday he will be. All I can promise is that you will have fun at this show!
We have done enough shows at this point that I could almost certainly fill the place just by doing repeats. But what fun would that be? I love taking a chance and mixing things up. Griffin House, who sells out our venue within a matter of days or hours every time he plays here, did not sell out his first show here (see more about Griffin in Ryan's article below).
Please get your tickets right now by clicking the following link.
It could be our last available show until November!
Some other musical notes:
- We just booked Eilen Jewell with her highly acclaimed full band for Wednesday night, February 26th. She mixes the sultriness of a Pieta Brown and the heartfelt gramble of a Lucinda Williams with a splash of blues. She will be making the Midwest rounds with a stop at City Winery, Stoughton Opera House and here... nice company. We are honored to have her. On sale soon.
- We are sorry to tell you the Willie Nile show is on hold for right now. Willie has something happening in Europe he could not pass up. We are currently working on a replacement date. More to come.
- Sara Ptak, the niece of our emcee Tom, will be performing a recital at Saint Patrick's Church on August 22nd at 7pm. I know there are some great voices and talent on both sides of Sara's family... but what happened to Tom?
Please read more about Sara. Blog on...

Around the Industry
Is Menu Nutritional Information Really Necessary?
By Jimmy
Over the course of the last several years, there has been much talk in our industry about the importance of healthy meals and including calorie and other nutritional information on menus for guests to view. But does what the government's been mandating us to include on our menus really matter to consumers?
With as much talk about eating healthy, I can say we have discussed how we may provide this information on our menus in the near future. With the recent advancements we have just made with our digital menus, this WILL become an option. This is what people want, right? But how many of you really go out to a restaurant for dinner in order to watch your calorie intake and eat healthier than your home-cooked meal? I bet most of you would say no, and studies now back this up.
With as much attention that has been paid to requiring restaurants to include calories and other nutritional information on their menus, you would think that most Americans are very concerned about eating healthy when they go out. However, according to some reports, less than 43% of Americans pay attention to this information on restaurant menus. Why? Because going out to eat is a way of treating ourselves. It gives us the chance to indulge in food and drink that we can have prepared for us.
It seems we become flexible in our daily restrictions when we go out to eat because we feel we "owe" it to ourselves to break the rules and let loose. When it comes to the food we buy at the supermarket, this is where we keep a close eye on that information because 68% of us look at these nutritional values. Calorie counts do not make people decide on healthier choices, because in studies, health conscious customers were not necessarily ordering the healthiest items on the menu. They were just choosing smaller portions, not finishing the entire meal or skipping out on courses such as appetizers or desserts.
Customization to one's diets or wants is important because it gives the message that eating healthy at a restaurant does not always mean giving up your favorite foods. We have incorporated a bit of this on our menu recently. Take our salad selections, for example. You can now basically create your own salad from the lettuce base you begin with, to a wide variety of flavorful toppings to make it complete. Or why not choose from one of our amazing healthy side dishes? On their own, they are a perfect size for one. However, served along any entree dish, they are perfect for sharing and yes, healthy.
We want you to know that while indulging on some amazing dishes that we create, we go through great lengths to bring the freshest, most flavorful and healthy products to our customer. All of our ingredients are made fresh, from scratch, in house each day.
So regardless of whether you're watching your calories or portion size, go ahead and "indulge" on some Uptown favorites. After all, you owe it to yourself!

Griffin House Mentions LaSalle in Travel Blog Interview
By Ryan
Back when Griffin House started playing here in 2006, it was a show that we just happened to take a shot with. Relatively unknown at the time, we enjoyed Griffin's music at the restaurant, and with the advent of the Playlist Theater we decided to give his a show chance. Kind of a stab in the dark - similar to the upcoming show we have in Andy Frasco.
What we didn't realize at the time was how good Griffin actually was. He has turned out to be one of our best, if not THE best, draw. We also had no idea how much Griffin would come to enjoy our restaurant, our town, and the people that frequent our theater.
It was after his 2nd or 3rd appearance at the Playlist Theater when Griffin started to garner some pretty major notoriety. We were nervous he would soon be too big to play here. It was after one of those appearances where he said, "No matter what happens with my career, I will always make sure I put Uptown Grill on my tour list. I will be back every year." He has held true to that statement and shows no signs of breaking that "verbal agreement." We keep our fingers crossed!
In fact, Griffin has developed relationships with many people from our area and usually takes time out of his busy schedule to plan an event around town while he is visiting. We apparently are no exception. When Alexis and I went to see Griffin in Chicago last February - as he was taking photos with some fans - he stopped us, and asked the fans if it was okay if he had his "friends" take the photo. Pretty neat... of all the towns he visits while traveling the country, it's amazing that he remembers a couple of people from a small town called LaSalle.
What we especially appreciate about Griffin is simply that he truly does seem to enjoy our area and our venue. He is very genuine in his comments... as is evident from his recent comments about LaSalle in an interview on a well-received travel blog. Of all the towns in all of the country, he takes time out to mention you and our restaurant. We think that's an incredibly nice salute to what started as a stab in the dark.
Read in our blog to see what he had to say.

From the Bar
The Fall of Beer
By Josh
A recent Gallup poll has found that many Americans are starting to favor liquor and spirits as their drink of choice over the ever-popular beer. The poll shows that in the early 1990s, over 70% of Americans chose beer over any other alcoholic beverage - unlike today where the poll shows a dramatic drop to only 40% of people choosing beer. (I guess this may seem surprising to those of us in the industry who thought that trendy craft beers were on the rise, not the decline.)
While many of you may think "so what," you have to understand the repercussions of this. The 90s and early 2000s saw a dramatic rise in craft breweries making small batch and craft beers. In turn, you can now find hundreds of different selections of beers made by independent companies all over your liquor store shelves that are readily available to anyone. But over the last few years, the alcohol industry had started to see the trends shift to a different area of beverages. As the poll shows, liquor has started to become ever more popular among the masses.
As example, small batch bourbons have made a huge impact in the liquor industry with new companies starting to sprout up all over the United States. Brands such as Maker's Mark have felt the effects of this and were considering watering down their product in order to make more whiskey to meet demands. While we can't assume that this occurs overnight, it does require the alcohol industry to keep in tow. And places like us have to take this into consideration when deciding what to add and take off our menu.
As evidenced by the dramatic changes to the restaurant this summer, we like to "keep up with the times!" Either way, you'll always find that our bar has a plentiful selection of beers, wine, liquor, and most any other spirit you can imagine. So no matter what public demand cries for, we're positive that the Uptown will always be able to answer that call!
