4th of July Hours

Plus a View of the Fireworks

By Ryan

Our Hours for the 4th of July Holiday will be:
Wednesday, July 3rd:  11am to 10pm
Thursday, July 4th:  4pm to 10pm

The city of Peru will host their fireworks on Wednesday night, July 3rd at dusk. The fireworks will be shot off from Water Street which is just a few blocks down the road from us. Over the years, we have been able to see several good shows from our front entrance. Our sidewalk café is one of the most comfortable and relaxing in the area. Come enjoy a great view of the Peru fireworks.

Obviously, any fireworks let off close to the ground are those that can be heard, but not seen. The rest of the show is in plain sight looking west from either our patio or sidewalk. I know the crowds on Water Street can be huge, so why fight it? Stop down to the Uptown, pull up a seat, and of course our staff will be here to serve cocktails, appetizers, dinner or any other preference you might have... no wrist band required.

Around the Industry

QR Codes

By Jimmy

The QR code was invented back in 1994 by the automobile company Toyota's subsidiary, Denso Wave in Japan. The original idea of this code was to help track vehicles and parts during the manufacturing process at high speeds. Although not popular outside this industry for many years, it seems to have finally taken off. In fact, with the advancement of smart phones booming in the last 5+ years, you're bound to come across these odd looking bar codes many times throughout your day. I recently read an article that shows how QR codes are now being implemented into the food we eat.

The QR code is an abbreviation for quick response matrix barcode that is used by machines to record information about a particular product. In our industry, up until now, it has been used to help customers gain information about their restaurants. By using an app on your phone, it allows you to find information about such things as menu, featured items, directions, reservations, website, etc. There are so many things that can be linked to provide information about a particular place.

For our carryout customers, we offer a refrigerator magnet that has our phone number and a QR code that links to our featured specials and menu for the day. Simply throw on the fridge and you have our number and menu available in your hand with the click of a button when it comes time to choose what's for dinner.

What is interesting is that a sushi chef in San Diego has found another creative way to use this code. Not only to inform his customers about his restaurant, he has found a way using edible ink to print these QR codes on the food he serves...

Seafood Specials

Steamed Mussels and Rainbow Trout

By Josh

Steamed Mussels

The perfect summer meal starts with the perfect summer appetizer.  This week, we are offering fresh mussels in a lemon basil and white wine broth.  This light and slightly fluffy textured mollusk is a quintessential opener for any meal that won't leave you feeling weighted down.

Our freshly steamed mussels are tossed with fresh basil, lemon, and white wine for the authentic Italian feel without that expensive Italian restaurant price!  Followed with a glass of white wine from our extensive wine menu and a cool night on the patio... you couldn't ask for a more perfect dining experience!

Pretzel Crusted Rainbow Trout

In keeping with the healthier and lighter dining experience, we are also featuring pretzel crusted rainbow trout. Here at Uptown, we are lightly pan frying the trout in a pretzel crust which is a new spin on the traditional bread crumb crust used at many other places.  The fish is then topped with a stone ground mustard butter with a side of sauteed Swiss chard and roasted rosemary new potatoes.

The fish itself is native to the tributaries that feed into the Pacific Ocean from North America and Asia. Most closely related to the salmon, this trout is a popular target for sport fisherman.  Being very popular in Western cuisine, rainbow trout is typically farm raised or caught wild within the streams of the U.S.  This trout has a tender and mild flesh with almost nutty flavor and is sought after for its omega-3 fatty acids which help prevent heart attack, stroke and heart disease.

Not only is this dish good for your health, but it also tastes great too!  This light and fresh dish is a great take on a perfect summer entree that will definitely leave you fulfilled.

Firecracker Burger

For the sake of patriotism, we take our juicy beef patty (shown at right) and give it a lil taste of Americana for the day.  First, we add some RED jalapenos and a WHITE onion. We fry them up to give the taste some kick (a.k.a. firecracker), and we combine it with melted BLUE cheese!  And as a special treat to celebrate America's birthday... we serve it with a flaming sparkler, straight to your table.
