At a press conference in Lima I joined Stefan Austermuhle of Mundo Azul, our partner in efforts to protect Peru's dolphins, announcing steps aimed at ending the slaughter of dolphins for human consumption and for shark bait.
|
We told the press that we would maintain constant surveillance of coastal villages of Peru for sale of dolphin meat. Our latest investigation indicates a decline in dolphin meat offered for sale, possibly an indication that our efforts have driven this brutal business under the table making it less profitable. We showed undercover video of dolphin meat sales in Talara, a village north of Lima, where we did find dolphin meat for sale.
|
On that same occasion, I presented Stefan with the Dolphin Defender Award, supported by a total of 26 international marine protection organizations.
|
This award was given for his truly heroic work, including 24 days at sea in a rundown small boat, to obtain footage of the killing of dolphins for shark bait. It is important that the government of Peru know that millions around the world support the efforts to protect dolphins off its coastline.
We presented a pilot for a film that might be called The Cove II - a dramatic and alarming story of the discovery of the slaughter of thousands of dolphins for shark bait and human consumption. Much of the important footage for this documentary has already been acquired. The last thing the Peruvian government wants is to become the new "Japan", a nation epitomizing cruel and destructive policies against dolphins, whales and oceans.
|
The challenge is huge. The potential benefits - saving the lives of thousands of dolphins - are very real. BlueVoice is committed to this work and we ask your support. Take a moment and reflect on the value of the life of one dolphin; then extend that to thousands of dolphins and imagine them safe and free in the oceans.
The financial support of BlueVoice members makes this work possible. We thank all of you who have joined the BlueVoice team and we ask your continued generosity for this extraordinarily important work with so much potential to save so many dolphins.

BlueVoice Offers Bounty on Peru Dolphin Killers |

During my just completed trip to Peru I announced a $500 reward to be paid by BlueVoice to each person who provides information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone harming dolphins or trading in dolphin meat. Results were immediate. Fishermen came forward with highly valuable information.
In addition to the thousands of dolphins killed for shark bait and human consumption,a new threat to dolphins has been revealed. But with this information also comes the means to bring tremendous financial pressure on Peru to protect all dolphins.
I can't reveal the particulars of the undercover work we're undertaking but the potential results are huge.
As distinct from Japan, Peruvian law protects dolphins - if it is enforced. This is where the hope lies.
The funding for this bounty will come from BlueVoice members. Please consider a donation and let's put a stop to this slaughter.
