Timothy Smith

Senior Vice President, Director of Environmental Social and Governance Shareowner Engagement, Walden Asset Management

"Over the last few years there has been a dramatic expansion as well as mainstreaming of ESG investing in virtually all asset classes. Witness the fact that globally investors who are members of PRI have AUM of approximately $45 Trillion. Many investment managers with household names are responding to client interest on climate change, human rights, diversity and governance, just to name a few issues. And other firms are digging deeper and using their voice and vote as shareholders to impact company policies and practices. Finally companies are also highlighting their Sustainability records noting excellence has a positive influence on shareholder value."

Join Us on November 20 (#BSASSI)
See Tim Smith and over 20 expert practitioners at our second full-day Sustainable Investment seminar. Gather practical advice on navigating the evolving sustainable investing landscape.

BSAS Advocacy Update

The Society continues to make strides with our ongoing advocacy initiatives to promote the importance of both the CFA brand and our members' commitment to investment rigor and ethics. In particular, we want to highlight six upcoming events and ongoing activities:

  1. Our Free BSAS member luncheon presentation,
Buying Lubrizol: A Look At David Sokol's Trades, will take place on Friday, November 7. CFA Institute leaders will discuss the infamous misdeeds and ethical lapses by former Berkshire Hathaway investment executive David Sokal. Prior to disclosure of these trades in 2011, Sokal had been widely viewed as Warren Buffett's protg and likely successor. (Note:  Pre-Registration is required and must be completed by noon on November 5 through the BSAS website).
  2. Asset Manager Code of Professional Conduct (AMC)
  3. Financial Literacy community education
  4. Outreach efforts at local colleges and business schools
  5. State Treasurer's Office
  6. Promotion of CFA, CIPM, and Claritas exam programs

Asset Allocation 2015:  Liquidity

Thursday, February 12, 2015

The Seaport Hotel and World Trade Center, One Seaport Lane, Boston, MA

Markets have benefited from unprecedented accommodative monetary policies from the Federal Reserve, ECB, Bank of England and Bank of Japan.  These policies will eventually end.  With economies in varying stages of growth, and at different points in the credit cycle, global policy divergence will have implications for currencies, interest rates and asset prices, creating both opportunities and risks for investors. While the end-game of regulatory reform has yet to be determined, some market participants fear reduced liquidity in certain markets raises the potential for future volatility.  Join us for a discussion with industry experts on these various dynamics and the potential implications for investor portfolios.
