HB 5 Update

Only high school students who pursue an Honors plan, or a diploma specializing in math and science, will be required to take Algebra II under the State Board of Education's preliminary recommendations for implementing House Bill 5.

The State Board will give final approval to the new graduation requirements at its January meeting.

---

House Bill 5 included sweeping changes to the public education system, including increased flexibility for students to explore their individual interests as they prepare for higher education or the workforce. HB 5 reduced the number of end-of-course exams from fifteen to five and rewrote the state's graduation requirements including a provision for a pathway to graduation along a career or technology track. This provision is intended to help reduce the dropout rate for students who may not necessarily be interested in pursuing a college degree.

Winter weather issues could be a factor later this week. A decision will be made as early as possible on whether or not we'll have school. "Put It Down, Save A Life" is a program that challenges Mansfield ISD juniors and seniors to think about the consequences of drinking and the dangers of texting and driving.
