Dr. Morrison Named Lone Finalist for Garland ISD Superintendent Administration  Dr. Bob Morrison was named the lone finalist for the position of Superintendent of Garland ISD in Garland, Texas at their January 24 board meeting. Dr. Morrison has served as Superintendent of Mansfield ISD for four years. He also held leadership positions in the curriculum department for six years. MISD Board President Beth Light said, "Dr. Morrison has brought such a great wealth of new programs to our district. We wish him well in new job, but will miss his energy and leadership." After being named the lone finalist, a state-mandated 21-day waiting period will take place before Dr. Morrison officially begins his tenure in Garland ISD. The Mansfield ISD School Board will meet on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 to discuss the district's plan. Read on... |

Next Two School Year Calendars Approved
School Board
 The Mansfield ISD Board of Trustees approved the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school district calendars at their January 22 Regular Board Meeting.
The calendar presented for approval was developed by the Districtwide Educational Improvement Council (DEIC) working as an ad hoc Calendar Committee. DEIC met in October, November and December 2012 to discuss calendar planning, and finalize a calendar recommendation. Two calendar options were developed by DEIC. DEIC conducted an on-line calendar preference survey that ran December 20, 2012, through January 11, 2013.
The approved calendars include four days with early dismissals for students so that campuses can hold teacher professional development. The times for those early dismissals have not been set. Read more...

District parents, community members, educators, elected officials, and business leaders are encouraged to attend this unified story spotlighting student success through guest speakers and student performers from Arlington, Grand Prairie, Kennedale, Mansfield, and Midlothian school districts. Mansfield HS Senior Named Defensive Player of the Year
Chad Whitener, Mansfield High School Senior Linebacker, was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year by the Fort Worth 1st Down Club. He was presented the award at their first awards banquet on Thursday, December 6, at the Omni Hotel in Fort Worth. Math and Science Tournament On Saturday, January 26, 2013, Danny Jones Middle School will host a Math and Science Tournament for competitive math and science teams of students in grades 5-8.
Spelling Bee The District Spelling Bee will be held in the morning on Friday, February 8, at The Center.
High School Drill Team Clinic & TryoutsDrill Team Clinic & Tryouts will be held in March. All tryouts will be held at Legacy High School. The Mandatory Parent Meeting is being held at the The Center on Monday, February 4, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. OR Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at 7:00 p.m.

27 Students Named Texas All-State Musicians
Twenty-seven Mansfield ISD high school students were named Texas All-State musicians following weekend Area Auditions. SUMMIT HS BAND: Christopher Adams, Sophie Baker, Stamesha Bello, Hazen Dean, Elizabeth Martinez, Jessica Martinez, and Tyra Thompson
MANSFIELD HS BAND: Alex Williams, Stephen Woodford, Jacob Treude, and Salem Shaw

Senior Art Shows
The Senior Art Shows for our Advanced Visual Art Students continue in 2013. These shows are held at The Center and give students an opportunity to have an art show beyond the Annual District Art Show. The current show is January 14-25, featuring Summit High School students Charleston Angton and Shaheed Johnson. The next show runs January 28, through February 8, for artists from Mansfield High School.

Highlights from the January 22, 2013 Board Meeting
Judy K Miller ES - The contractor has progressed in the roofing work dry-in sufficiently to commence interior build-out, as scheduled. Facility completion is May 2013. As a reminder, Miller Elementary will be occupied by Boren Elementary starting in fall 2013 as we begin the campus replacement construction process approved in the 2011 bond.
Ag-Science Center - The New Ag-Science Center, Phases 1 and 2, design has commenced. The current development plan for bidding in March 2013 may be deferred pending review of an Equestrian Center addition to the Facility. The Equestrian Center presentation is planned to go to the Board on February 26, 2013.
JL Boren ES and Alice Ponder ES Construction Documents are under final review and submitted for permit review and approval. The Bid Proposal Development will commence in March, 2013.
New Tarver-Rendon Elementary (referred to in construction docs as "Rendon ES 24") interior work has commenced on the 1st Floor, as scheduled. Construction began last May and will be completed next summer in time for Tarver-Rendon students to start at their new location next fall.
Package 1, High Schools District Wide Wireless and Security Projects are complete. Security adjustments for Operational Support are underway. Package 2, Wireless and Security Projects will commence Bid Proposal Development in February, 2013.
The first major construction renovation package for New and Renovation Work - Cross Timbers IS, TA Howard MS, and Summit HS Construction Documents have been submitted to the City of Arlington for permits review and approval. Mansfield HS Gymnasium Addition Permit drawings will be issued to the City of Mansfield.
The R.L. Anderson Stadium Turf Replacement Project bid solicitation was issued January 14, 2013, for bid proposals February 12, 2013 and contract award is planned for the end of February, 2013.

District Sets Common Legislative Priorities
Mansfield ISD is among seven school districts in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area to recently set common Legislative priorities to support and oppose potential issues in the next session.
The superintendents of Birdville ISD, Carroll ISD, Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD, Grapevine-Colleyville ISD, Keller ISD, Mansfield ISD, and Rockwall ISD, representing 143,673 students in North Texas, present joint legislative priorities for the 83rd Legislative session.
Legislative Priorities
- Support public school finance legislation that properly funds state requirements and allows for discretion at the local level.
- Support effective and equitable academic accountability systems.
- Support legislation that honors the institution of independent school districts in Texas by providing greater local control, allowing each community to address the educational needs of their students.
- Oppose legislation intended to change the highly successful and efficient Teacher Retirement System.
- Oppose legislation that allows or creates private school entitlements in any form, including but not limited to school vouchers or taxpayer savings grants.
