PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Colleagues: Welcome to 50 new Diplomate colleagues (see below) that have successfully completed the 2016 certifying examination given January 21 and 22 in Orlando, Florida. I applaud the perseverance and time commitment that each of our new Diplomates devoted to this challenging examination. Thanks goes to the Examination Committee and Dr. Joe Wakshlag for planning and successfully implementing this exam. We encourage our new Diplomates to draw in a breath, but then dive in and help with the many tasks necessary to keep the College in motion. We will post openings for committee memberships in coming newsletters.
I must offer an apology and correction. In the November 2015 newsletter I thanked Dr. Chris Kawcak for his service as Equine Regent on the Board of Directors. I thanked Chris too soon! His term of service on the Board continues through October 2016. Dr. Steve Adair was listed as an Equine Regent, but his term has been completed. Steve has worked diligently on the Board and on the Credentials and Residency Committee as chair and board liaison. His term on the Credentials and Residency Committee is completed in October 2016. Thank you, Steve!
A thanks also goes to Dr. Joe Wakshlag who has completed his duties as co-Secretary-Treasurer. He will continue to assist as needed in the transition to our new Secretary-Treasure group: Dr. David Frisbie, Dr. Joe Spoo and administrative assistant Lynsey Bosch.
I would also like to note the passing of an outstanding equine veterinarian that, though not a member of the College, offered many early insights in sports medicine and rehabilitation. Dr. Kerry Ridgway passed in January 2016. Dr. Ridgway was an early adopter of integrative medicine, realizing that the athletic performance of the horse was dependent on its overall well being. He practiced chiropractic, acupuncture and was exceptionally knowledgeable regarding performance horse issues such as saddle fit, dentistry and shoeing. Dr. Ridgway lectured and taught worldwide and had an influence on many equine veterinarians.
Best to you all!

ACVSMR Lecture Tracks at NAVC Draw Large AudiencesThank you to all those who attended the ACVSMR Small Animal and Equine Lecture Tracks at NAVC 2016 - and kudos to our speakers for their informative presentations! The lecture tracks were created in collaboration with the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians (AARV), which had a full day of lectures the previous day. Dr. Julia Tomlinson, program chair and moderator of the Small Animal Track, shared the following recap: The Small Animal Track was on Tuesday, January 19th, and it started with a panel discussion about non-surgical management of cruciate disease. Drs. Laurie McCauley, Jenn Brown and Cindy Otto had a large audience with many questions. Dr. Otto then talked about diagnostic approaches to lameness and about poor performance in canine athletes, covering internal medicine and orthopedic issues. Dr. Brown talked about the unique challenges of working with FEMA search and rescue dogs and about the findings from Dr. Otto's study on longevity of working dogs who were at the 9/11 site. Dr. Brown then covered choosing modalities in the acute field situation (on site at performance events) and the pros and cons of each choice. The 15-minute clinical brief topics were nutrition for peak performance (Dr. Otto) and common muscle injuries in sporting dogs (Dr. McCauley).
In the Equine Track on Wednesday, January 20st, the focus was on treatment of tendon and ligament injuries. Dr. Lauren Schnabel talked about biologic therapies for tendon and ligament lesions, which included gene-primed stem cells and vectors to carry growth factors as well as the hot topic of platelet rich plasma. Dr. Kent Allen talked about forelimb distal deep digital flexor issues and about rehabilitation of proximal suspensory ligament issues in the hind limb. Dr. Duncan Peters gave some practical protocols for rehabilitation of tendon and ligament injuries. The day ended with short talks covering distal interphalangeal joint collateral ligament injuries treated with regenerative therapies and an explanation of combined imaging using MRI and ultrasound together, which is used for biopsies in human medicine.
Special thanks too to Dr. Jose M. Garcia-Lopez, program chair of the Equine Track, and Dr. Erica McKenzie, moderator of the Equine Track. |
