A NOTE FROM DR. BEEKLEY

Back to those games!

Here's a game that you can play at home to help with learning facts.

Fact War
Rules:
Shuffle the cards. Deal an equal number of cards to each player. Each player keeps his or her stack of cards face down. The youngest player goes first. The player flips 2 cards and adds them. Next, player 2 flips 2 cards and adds them.
All face cards and aces equal 10. The player whose fact yields the highest answer takes the cards.
If both facts yield the same value then each player puts 3 cards face down and flips over another 2 cards. The player with the fact that yields the greatest answer wins all of the cards.
The player with the most cards when time is up is the winner.
Advanced Play: Instead of adding, multiply the 2 cards.

Guess If You Can
Let your child think of a number between a stated range of numbers while you try to guess the number by asking questions. Here is a sample conversation:
Child: I am thinking of a number between 1 and 100.
Parent: Is it more than 50?
Child: No.
Parent: Is it an even number?
Child: No.
Parent: Is it more than 20 but less than 40?
Child: Yes.
Parent: Can you reach it by starting at zero and counting by 3's?
Child: Yes.
(At this stage, your child could be thinking of 21, 27, 33, or 39.)
Figure out the answers to your own questions.
After you have guessed your child's number, let your child guess a number from you by asking similar questions.

What Are My Chances?
What you'll need: Two coins, paper, and pencil to keep score
Directions:
1)   Flip one coin. Every time it comes up heads, your child gets 1 point. Every time it comes up tails, you get 1 point. Flip it 50 times. Tally by 5's to make it easier to keep track of scores. The person with the most points wins. If one person has 10 points more than the other person does, score an extra 10 points. Does this happen very often? Why not?
2)   Flip two coins. If the coins come up two tails or two heads, your child scores 1 point. If it comes up heads and tails, you get 1 point. After 50 flips, see who has more points. Do you think the game is fair? What if one person received 2 points for every double heads and the other person received 1 point for everything else. Is this fair?
3)   Flip one coin. Then flip the other. If the second coin matches the first coin, your child scores 1 point. If the second coin doesn't match the first coin, you receive 1 point. Try this 50 times. Is the result the same as in the previous game?

Here are some games that you might have in your closet that are fun and good for reinforcing math concepts:
Addition, Subtraction and Counting Skills
Chutes and Ladders, Candy Land, Connect Four, Hi Ho! Cherry-O, Sorry, Uno
Patterns, Attributes, Shapes and Geometry
Crazy Eights, Guess Who?, Rummikub, Tangrams, Jigsaw Puzzles
Strategy, Reasoning, and Spatial Perception
Mastermind, Battleship

Have fun!

SECOND GRADE NUMBER KIDS FIELD TRIP

Mrs. McKenna's second grade students joined their buddy class from Middletown at the Eli Whitney Museum as part of the Number Kids Program. They constructed a car and used a ramp to put it in motion. Students were able to track data by measuring distance. Everyone enjoyed this hands-on learning experience.

S.T.E.A.M. FAIR

Chester Elementary School is once again charging full STEAM ahead, introducing students to important 21st Century skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Design and Math, through our S.T.EA.M. Fair.

The ways in which students can participate are outlined below:
Grades K, 1, 2 & 3 = Invention (optional)
Grade 4 = Science Experiments (mandatory)
Grades 5 & 6 = Invention or Engineering Design (mandatory)

Mrs. Lenz has introduced the invention opportunity, as well as the importance of considering art and design elements as you invent, engineer, or experiment, to all CES students.

Mrs. Clark will be working with all fourth grade students on the scientific method. Each student will be participating by researching and completing an experiment as part of a class assignment.

Mr. O'Brien, Mr. Kalkreuth and Dr. Beekley have introduced fifth and sixth graders to the engineering options. Students in fifth and sixth grades have the opportunity to invent something or participate in one of three engineering challenges:
Engineering Challenge 1 = Catapult
Engineering Challenge 2 = Rube Goldberg Machine
Engineering Challenge 3 = Buoyant Vessel

Our S.T.E.A.M. Fair Open House will be held on March 29th. The judging of student inventions will take place in the morning on March 30th. Competitions for the three engineering challenges will take place in the afternoon on March 30th and March 31st. Full STEAM ahead!

More details have been sent under separate cover with your child.

CES LUNCH ACCOUNTS

Many cafeteria accounts are not up-to-date, and we ask that all accounts be brought current. If you receive a letter with a lunch deficit, please be sure to include all of the information on the check or the front of the envelope if payment is sent to school. You may also pay on-line at any time. Your assistance with this is greatly appreciated by all of us.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT NEWS

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT THEMES

The Social Development Theme for the month of February is Cooperation.  The Social Development Book of the Month is  Stone Soup. Please enjoy a description of the book below.

Clever soldiers outwit greedy townspeople wit
h the creation of a special soup in this cherished classic, a Caldecott Honor book. First published in 1947, this picture book classic has  remained one of Marcia Brown's most popular and enduring books. This story, about three hungry soldiers who outwit the greedy inhabitants of a village into providing them with a feast, is based on an old French tale.

The goal of our Social Development Book-of-the-Month is to integrate literature and concomitant language arts objectives with themes and ideas that support our social development program.

The Chester Public Library is graciously partnering with us on our social development Book-of-the-Month initiative.  Our Book-of-the-Month is displayed at the library and there are multiple copies available for families to borrow, so that the discussion begun at school can be shared and extended at home.
