A NOTE FROM DR. BEEKLEY

Read at Least 20 Minutes a Day! Why?

Let's figure it out ... mathematically!

Student A reads 20 minutes a night x 5 times each week.
Student B reads only 4 minutes a night or not at all!

Step 1:  Multiply minutes a night x 5 times each week.
Student A reads 20 minutes x 5 times a week = 100 min/week.
Student B reads 4 minutes x 5 times a week = 20 min/week.

Step 2:  Multiply minutes a week x 4 weeks each month.
Student A reads 400 minutes a month.
Student B reads 80 minutes a month.

Step 3:  Multiply minutes a month x 9 (approximate school year).
Student A reads 36,000 minutes in a school year.
Student B reads 720 minutes in a school year.

Student A practices reading the equivalent of ten school days a year.
Student B gets the equivalent of only two school days of reading practice.

By the end of 6th grade if Student A and Student B maintain these same reading habits, Student A will have read the equivalent of 60 whole school days. Student B will have read the equivalent of only 12 school days.

One would expect the gap of information retained would have widened considerably and, most likely, so would school performance. Which student would you expect to be more successful in school......and life?

ANNOUNCEMENTS

4TH GRADE VISITS THE FLO GRIS
On October 6th, 4th Grade students from Chester Elementary School enjoyed a day learning about early 1900's Connecticut Art History at the Florence Griswold Museum.  Students  learned the importance the Old Lyme Art Colony played in the American Impressionist movement.  In addition to touring the museum, each student was able to paint 'en plain air'  their own Impressionistic landscape. The museum's current special exhibit of The Wee-Faire Castles and Palaces will be used to inspire their own architecture designs on return to school.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

Thank you to the Chester Hose Company for visiting today and sharing how smoke detectors save lives.  The key message of this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign, October 4-10, is to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms.  For more information visit http://www.nfpa.org/safety-information/fire-prevention-week.

NURSE SUBSTITUTES

Currently, Region 4 is looking to augment their list of substitute nurses who are available to provide coverage in our buildings when a full-time nurse is absent.  If you are a registered nurse (RN) (or know an RN who might be interested in being placed on the Region 4 nursing substitute list), please go to the Region 4 webpage, click on the "Employment" link and submit your application materials.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT NEWS

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
October is National Bullying Awareness and Prevention Month. Your children will be engaged in Social Development Lessons throughout the month dealing with how to be a friend, being an upstander vs. a bystander, mean-spririted behavior vs. bullying, etc. October 21st is National Unity Day. In honor of this day we are asking all students, faculty and staff to wear orange shirts. There are some great talking points and activities that you can find on www.Pacer.org, a National Bullying Prevention Center. Below are some proactive ideas for discussing this issue with your child:

*    Talking to children about both being bullied and about being bullies.
*    Being a role model for kindness, caring, and understanding.
*    Speaking with children about bullying and cyber-bullying to make sure they are not engaging in it.
*    Discussing how hurtful cyber-bullying is, and emphasizing that what is online stays online forever.
*    Emphasizing that online misbehavior could affect your child's future.
*    Encouraging your children to tell you if they are bullied off or online.
*    Reassuring your child and making sure to remind school personnel that retaliation cannot be condoned.
*    Discussing Internet safety with your children, and monitoring what they are doing online.
*    Informing schools if there is bullying, and joining with schools to promote bullying awareness and prevention programs.

KINDERGARTEN AND NEW FAMILY "WELCOME TO CES"
The Social Development Committee, along with our Student Leadership Group, held their annual kindergarten/new family gathering at Camp Hazen on Sunday, October 4th. The purpose of the day is to give families of kindergarten and new students the opportunity to socialize, while engaging in fun team- building activities directed by Camp Hazen staff. It was a wonderful day and, as always, we enjoy the great community connection we have with Camp Hazen.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT THEMES
The Social Development Theme for the month of October is Self-Esteem. The Social Development Books of the Month are Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon (K-2) and Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun (3-6). Please enjoy a description of the books below.

Be yourself like Molly Lou Melon no matter what a bully may do.

Molly Lou Melon is short and clumsy, has buck teeth, and has a voice that sounds like a bullfrog being squeezed by a boa constrictor. She doesn't mind. Her grandmother has always  told her to walk proud, smile big, and sing loud, and she takes that advice to heart.

But then Molly Lou has to start in a new school. A horrible bully picks on her on the very first day, but Molly Lou Melon knows just what to do about that.

How can Ralph be so mean? Lucy is one of a kind and Ralph loves to point that out. Lucy's defining moment comes when Ralph truly needs help. Because she knows what she stands for, Lucy has the courage to make a good choice. This charming story empowers children to always do the right thing and be proud of themselves, even when they are faced with someone as challenging as Ralph.

The goal of our Social Development Book-of-the-Month is to integrate literature and concomitant language arts objectives with themes and ideas that support our social development program.

The Chester Public Library is graciously partnering with us on our social development Book-of-the-Month initiative.  Our Book-of-the-Month is displayed at the library and there are multiple copies available for families to borrow, so that the discussion begun at school can be shared and extended at home.
