NEW SESSION
The Digital Image:
The Nuts and Bolts of Marketing and Advertising
with Michael Hall and Jacqueline Beach, Owners/Artists at Black Iris Studio
Marketing is sometimes a scary word for the small-business owner. We are all so busy running our businesses that sometimes we forget to take care of the nuts and bolts that will help us create marketing and advertising campaigns. Michael Hall and Jacqueline Beach, the husband and wife team who owns and runs Black Iris Studio in Escanaba, know first-hand how difficult it is to work in and promote a small-business.
Michael is a seasoned digital photographer and a Facebook marketing wizard who has a real knack for helping your page reach far beyond the local area. Jacqueline spent many years as a graphics designer, and computer software instructor before becoming a full-time artist herself. Michael and Jacqueline will take you back to the basics and help you create and organize your digital image world so that you can utilize advertising and marketing opportunities when they come up.
- Michael will demonstrate and discuss photography options and tricks so you always have up-to-date product photos.
- Jacqueline will demystify the image acronym, discussing just what the heck are a JPG and a PDF as well as how to create a digital filing system so you can always find your images.
- They will discuss how different digital files are utilized in different media (i.e. facebook page vs. printed business cards). Then you can use similar images in different ways and create a look or a "brand" for your business.
- Michael will also give you a taste of how to really utilize a business Facebook page and make the most of free online advertising.
This course is a special shorter version of two longer courses that Michael and Jacqueline offer at the Bonifas Fine Arts Center. These courses were originally developed to help artists promote their work, but it was quickly evident that the same ideals could be applied to any small business. If you liked the break-out session contact the Bonifas Fine Art Center check and see when they will be doing full-versions of both courses.

Delta County Technology Planning Team Unveils Action Plan
The Delta County Technology Action Plan was unveiled Friday at the Delta County Chamber of Commerce as part of the county's participation in Connect Michigan's Connected Community Engagement Program. Delta County enrolled in the program to boost the local economy and quality of life for residents though increased access, adoption, and use of broadband.
"We are proud of the collaboration Delta County has exhibited in putting together our community assessment," said Vicki Schwab, director of the Delta County Economic Development Alliance. "Broadband access is critical to our economy and we now have a plan and suggested approach to increase adoption and use across all of Delta County."
Twenty-five Michigan communities are currently involved in some stage of the Connected program, and now Delta County has an action plan to make way for greater technology use across the community and pave the way for a brighter economic future.
Developing the plan involved participating in an extensive assessment of the county's overall broadband and technology infrastructure. The Technology Action Plan sets general community-wide broadband connectivity goals to work toward that will support economic development and residential quality of life.
"In today's technologically advanced environment, connectivity is increasingly a key ingredient in matching talent to employers' needs," said Holly Peoples, director of business services, Michigan Works! The Job Force Board. "Access to broadband is essential in many cases to identifying talent and making successful labor exchanges."
The Connected Community Engagement Program supports the development of an in-depth strategy for building a "connected" community by reviewing the technology landscape, developing regional partnerships, establishing local teams, and conducting a thorough community assessment of the broadband infrastructure.

The Heritage Half Crew: Dress to Impress
Some of the Delta County Heritage Half Marathon Crew will be attending the Cellcom event in Green bay looking their best. The group will be wearing very colorful shirts to let other regional runners know the Heritage Half will be happening July 6th of this year. This will help advertise the run and the Esky 150 celebration. "What a better way to spread the word then doing it at one of the largest running events within our Region," explained Gina Zanon, Director of the run. "We really think our Heritage Half is a great route, and we are just letting these runners know it's happening." The Saucony tech shirts are available at Water's Edge Chiropractic for $20. The shirt will offset some of the cost for race amenities. This is not the same shirt as the participant shirt for the run, but it is great quality. "We want people to have the opportunity to feel the shirt, and see that quality we are thinking for this event. One of the factors for runners that goes into account when signing for a run is the texture and quality of the shirt. " said Zanon. The Heritage Half will take place July 6th, 2013, and it is an official event of the Esky 150 celebration. The run will showcase the beautiful Highway 41 Shoreline. The route starts at Van Cleve Park in Gladstone at 7:30 a.m. passing by miles of shoreline view, downtown Escanaba, and ending at Ludington Park. Ludington Park will host a variety of Esky 150 Celebrations, which the runners will be able to enjoy after their run. Registration is $60.
