YMCA, OSF Medical Group, Bellin Health, and Esky 150 Committee Promote Community Weight Loss Program
150 Years ago the citizens of Delta County didn't need any motivation to move. In fact, their whole lives revolved around physical work. Fast forward 150 years to today's busy hectic life and you can see why remaining active in a healthy lifestyle is a challenge. In order to help, the Northern Lights YMCA, OSF St. Francis Hospital & Medical Group, Bellin Health, and the Esky 150 Committee are combining resources and sponsoring a program called 150 Days to Wellness.

The 150 Days to Wellness promotion is a part of the Escanaba 150th Birthday Celebration, and will run from February 4th through July 5th. "It will provide area citizens a way to participate in a life changing wellness event along with participation in a fun community celebration," said Dianna Seymour of Bellin Health.

The 150 day program is partner based with teams of two focusing on exercise and healthy eating habits. The kick-off and mini-health fair will take place in the Heirman Center at Bay College on February 4th beginning at 6:00 p.m. Then for the next 150 days, participants will begin a series of positive steps to improve their lifestyle habits. It awards chances in a drawing for every pound lost. "We wanted to provide a framework that anyone in the community could participate in and have the support of a partner" said Lana Scannell of OSF St. Francis Hospital & Medical Group. Top prize in the drawing is $1,000 to the winning team.

The 150 Days to Wellness program is open to the community. Registration fees are $29 for YMCA members and $199.00 for non-Y members. The non-member fee includes use of the YMCA facilities. All participants will be assigned to a YMCA certified personal trainer and will be assigned to a wellness team. Special group events will be offered to keep excitement and commitment level high.

"The New Year is the time that people traditionally make a resolution to lose weight and eat better," said Gary Nash, YMCA executive director. "We just wanted to provide a fun element and some support to make it more successful," he added.

For more information contact the YMCA at 789-0005.

The Heritage Half is off to a great start. 100 runners have already registered; one as far as Tennessee. During the Kickoff Party at Ernie's Irish pub, 86 participants took advantage of the $50 special. The Heritage Half Run became the most visited run in the Midwest on Active.com during the duration of the kickoff event. "We are so excited for the warm welcome we received during our kickoff party. The team of organizers was expecting about 50 runners, but the end number of runners who registered for the night surpassed our expectations," explained Gina Zanon, Director. "This gives us room for planning a safe and fun event," she concluded.

The Heritage Half Marathon, part of the Esky 150 celebration, will take place July 6th, 2013. The timed run will showcase the beautiful Highway 41 shoreline. The route starts at Van Cleve Park in Gladstone and ends at Ludington Park, passing by downtown Escanaba. The route will also include food and beverages for the runners sponsored by different local businesses.

"This is the best time to start thinking of a Half Marathon. It's the beginning of the year, and you can take your time starting slow to prevent major stress on your body if you are not used to running," explained Dr. Patrick Johnson from Water's Edge Chiropractic, organizer.

Registration is $60 and can be done online at www.active.com or you can pick a printed registration at Water's Edge Chiropractic 922 Delta Avenue, Gladstone.

It's time to plan a big birthday party for our great city of Escanaba! Founded in 1863, some Escanaba residents may remember our wonderful centennial celebration that took place in July of 1963. The parade and events that commemorated our 100th birthday still evoke fond memories.

Our sesquicentennial celebration is planned for July 5th -July 13th, 2013. There have been many events and activities planned already, including a variety of concerts, logrolling demos, water-ski shows, a mari-time festival, UP Trappers, car race, half-marathon, 5K run, singing contests, historic celebrations and beard growing contests, just to name a few!

Because of the two All School Reunions and the esky150 festivities, we are expecting thousands of people to attend this historic event!
