Paint - Your Homes' First Line
of Defense
As mentioned in last month's newsletter, Fall is a good time to do a semi-annual maintenance check on your home. One maintenance item that you should be checking during that inspection is the exterior paint. Has it changed color over the years? Or does it leave a chalky film on your hand when you touch it? Both are indications that it may be time for a new paint job. A good quality paint will create a barrier to the elements.
When painting homes for our clients, we use Sherwin Williams SuperPaint Exterior Acrylic Latex to deliver excellent performance and protect against the elements. Cold and frosty or hot and humid, this formula goes on smooth and resists blistering and peeling. And thanks to its advanced acrylic resin technology, you'll enjoy excellent adhesion and color retention. SuperPaint offers a dirt-resistant and mildew-resistant coating. It is the paint of choice for our painting subcontractor, Jackie Smith of Gene Smith Painting.
During your inspection, the other thing to look for is cracks in the masonry or rotting wood especially in two story homes or balconies. Taking care of these problems will insure a sound structure and eliminate water intrusion.
According to Jackie, all houses are different, but most can weather 7-10 years between paint jobs. To do a good job on a repaint, cracks should be filled with an elastomeric patch, and then the house should be pressure washed, and coated with an epoxy sealer. After this prep, the house is ready for a coat of satin finish paint, while the doors are sprayed with a gloss finish.
For the interior walls, he recommends using an eggshell finish with gloss on the trim. As for when to repaint the interior? "If the house is occupied by non-smoking adults, you'll get tired of the color before you'll actually need to paint!" was Jackie's reply.
Another special paint product that is used in TowlesCorp homes is an epoxy finish (with multi-color paint chips) for the garage floors. This is a great way to protect your floor from all the wear & tear associated with normal garage usage.
