Towles Family History

W. H."Wild Bill" Towles
My great, great grandfather
|
See the Newsletter Archives (above- "Quick Links") for more on this series that started with the July issue
*****
Capt William H (Wild Bill) Towles was my great, great grandfather. A Florida native born in Perry, FL in 1852, he moved to the Fort Myers area while in his twenties. He was a prolific businessman and entrepreneur who had interests in cattle, construction, mercantile operations, shipping and politics.
He married, built his own homes and raised his family there. As one of the first men appointed to the newly created Lee County Board of County Commissioners, and the first chairman, he was influential in having the yellow brick courthouse and the first hospital built.
He was friends with Thomas Edison and in 1907, when Edison wanted to plant royal palms along the main road of Fort Myers, Wild Bill contracted with him to provide the trees using his schooner to bring them from Cuba. When his partner WT Hull prepared 989 young royal palms for transport back to Fort Myers, a quarantine had been imposed to protect the US against yellow fever. They returned without the trees.
 | The Palms on McGregor |
Not one to be stopped, Towles & Hull found a local woods- man that was able to locate 270 royal palm trees from the Big Cypress area of the Everglades. Unfortunately, they did not survive, but by then the Cuban trees had been released and Towles shipped 1100 of them to Fort Myers which he planted and replanted until they were all used. He later sent back to Cuba for an additional 1300 palms.
Edison's local Fort Myers agent was against paying for the trees since only 300 were growing, but Towles wanted payment in full or he would reclaim the trees and sell them to the city and abutting property owners. No one knows if Edison paid Towles, but the Palms still line McGregor Boulevard in front of the Edison Winter home.
******
William Towles led an interesting life (and demise), that shaped the area we know as Fort Myers today.
Tune in next month to find out more about the life and times of Captain William Henry Towles!

Tricks, Treats and Textures!
In the construction industry, there are many variables, some good and some not so good...the "tricks and treats" of our business.
For the most part, we try to keep the "tricks" to a minimum. My threshold for errors, challenges and mistakes is extremely low, and for that reason, I make sure that they are addressed immediately. I know if we surveyed our clients, they would tell you that problems (that are just a normal part of any business) are taken care of in a timely manner at TowlesCorp. You can visit the testimonials page on our website to read our client's own words.
And that leads us to the "treats". I could list many, from the subcontractors we work with to our extraordinary clients and all the wonderful products and details that go into our homes. It really is a pleasure to have the opportunity to build homes in our beautiful area. Making a dream come true and seeing happy faces when we hand over the keys, is the highlight of my day. I want my homeowners to know that because of the care and quality we build into every home, they will enjoy their homes for a very long time. Definitely a "treat"!
Another treat, is the wonderful relationship we've had with Brent Garrod of Garrod Drywall, Inc for more years than I can remember. Brent and all the folks at his business are the focus for the "textures" part of today's topic. Browse through this newsletter for more info on the creative solutions he provides our clients.
Happy Halloween and don't eat too many treats!

Anatomy of a Million Dollar Home...
Textures, Finishes and Details
The many details that go into constructing a new home can be overwhelming to the homeowner. It works in everyone's favor to have a subcontractor that is not only dedicated to his craft, but also to the communication process with our clients.
 | Garrod Drywall, Inc Showroom |
It's not easy to understand this process, but Garrod Drywall, Inc.has taken
"communication" to the next level. In providing a hands-on, visual environment in his showroom, Brent Garrod makes sure that the homeowner can see (and feel) the huge variety of textures, finishes and designs that are available for a single item - drywall - that goes into a home.
There are textures to match your decor, from orange peel, knock down and skip trowel, to finishes like
 | LusterStone Ceiling Treatment |
"Lusterstone" (a crushed stone product that adds natural reflective dimension and highlights to surfaces) and faux painting to add depth to any room. Darker colors & finishes create more prominent textures, while lighter tones allow the texture to recede. Even the simplest piece of the homes' architecture, the corners of the
walls, can be dramatically upgraded by corner options such as squared, rounded, mini-rounded or chamfered (beveled). They can also be used in niches or ceiling treatments and combined with moldings and specialty lighting can really accent specific areas.
When building a custom home, every detail is important and the walls and ceilings are the largest surfaces in the house. Why not "treat" them (and yourself) to a truly unique finish!
