"Wild Bill" Towles

My great, great grandfather

See last month's issue - Quick Links - Newsletter Archives (above) for more

In 1884, Bill Towles bought out the Summerlin's interest in the Punta Rassa cattle facility and moved to the small unincorporated village of Fort Myers, a village of only several hundred people. A young widower of 34 with a small daughter, he proceeded to build a new residence...a major event for this small town. He also began to build his business interests in his new hometown. Bill Towles entered the mercantile business with James E. Hendry (sound familiar) and opened the "Towles and Hendry" general store at First and Jackson Streets. A year later they had a wharf built at the foot of Jackson St, the second largest dock on the river. Towles now controlled the cattle wharf and the cattle pens. Another partnership with Dr. H.T. Lykes started a shipping line that would carry cattle to Cuba or Key West on an "as needed" basis. Over the next twenty years, this enterprise grew into the "Towles Steamship Line", based in Fort Myers with scheduled ports-of-call in Texas, Tampa, Fort Myers, Key West and Havana.

William Towles led an interesting life (and demise), that shaped the area we know as Fort Myers today.

Tune in next month to find out more about the life and times of Captain William Henry Towles!

Living in the Lightning Belt
We've Had A Striking Summer Season...
Lightning Strikes!

Keith Towles
According to the National Weather Service website Florida was number three in cloud-to-ground flashes in 2013. Texas (#1) and Oklahoma (#2) took the lead.

This year our office has been fielding a large variety of calls related to lightning, surge protectors and protecting appliances and electronics. For the past few years, our Summers have been relatively dry, but this year has set us back on our normal path of almost daily rain and with it lots of lightning. It will be interesting to see where we place next year!

There are a few ways that you can protect your home beyond standard small in-house surge protectors. They can either be built in to a home at construction, or added to an existing home older home.

We've used lightning rods or whole house surge protectors for our clients and they've been happy with them. See our feature story below for more information on both.

Stay safe and when thunder roars...go indoors!

Anatomy of a Million Dollar Home...

Lightning Rods*

Lightning rods are designed to protect a building from a direct strike. Lightning protection systems do not prevent lightning from striking the structure, but intercept a strike, provide a conductive path for the harmful electrical discharge to follow and disperse the energy safely into the ground. It is very important that all components be properly connected to minimize the chances for sparks or side flashes.

While lightning rods help protect a structure from a direct lightning strike, a complete lightning protection system is needed to help prevent harmful electrical surges and possible fires caused by lightning entering a structure via wires and pipes. A complete system also includes electrical surge protection devices for incoming power, data and communication lines; and surge protection devices for vulnerable appli
ances. Lightning protection may also be needed for gas piping. Any lightning protection system should follow the national safety standards and requirements of the Lightning Protection Institute, National Fire Protection Association and Underwriters Laboratories.

Whole House Surge Protectors

Our electrician, Paul Russel of AMP Electric, has installed quite a few whole house surge protectors for our homeowners. He agrees that this has been a particularly volatile lightning season. His recommendation is to install an Intermatic Surge Protector at the main distribution panel. It is attached to the exterior side of the panel and connected to its own breaker.  Model #IG1240-RC3 has six modes of surge protection, a 5 year product warranty and a $10,000 connected equipment coverage warranty for 5 yrs. The $250 cost covers both the unit and installation for any size home in Punta Gorda or Port Charlotte (trip charges may apply for other areas). Paul does suggest additional individual protectors for electronics, just to be safe.

See the "Subcontractors Spotlight" on the left for contact info for Thor Lightning Protection (lightning rods) and AMP Electric (whole house surge protectors).
