Towles Family History

"Wild Bill" Towles

Have you ever wondered about the history behind family owned businesses? Most people know that I took over this business from my dad, Tim Towles. But did you know about "Wild Bill" Towles, my great, great grandfather?

William H.Towles was born  in 1852 to John & Sarah Ann Towles of Perry, FL. In his twenties he formed a cattle partnership with the Summerlin brothers, Jake & Sam  (sound familiar?... Summerlin Rd in Ft. Myers). In 1876 the partners decided to erect a real fence on the open range from a point twelve miles east of present day LaBelle to a point on the east side of Oklaochoobee Slough to keep their cattle from wandering into the Everglades.

From this start William Towles led an interesting life (and demise), that shaped the area we know as Fort Myers today.

Tune in next month to find out more about the life and times of Captain William Henry Towles!

We Don't Like to Hear About it,
But We Do Need to be Prepared!

What am I referring to? Hurricane Season!Keith Towles

Even though it started in May, we still have till November to be "on guard". So far it's been a quiet season, but that can change quickly. Hopefully, you have your hurricane kit and supplies all ready in the wings...just in case. But have you considered an item that can be a really big help if a storm hits? A generator!

Almost 75% of the homes we build incorporate a generator in the plans from the beginning. This is a wise investment to protect their costly upscale appliances from power outages and surges. But even if you don't have one already, they are fairly easy to "add on" either as a permanent installation or "as needed".

Of course, my hope is that we'll be spared from a turbulent season, but just in case, consider adding a generator to your home's protection system.

Anatomy of a Million Dollar Home...

Standby Generators

When designing the plans for our homes, we consult with the homeowners as to how to protect their homes while making life easier for them. Why have to deal with storm shutters if you can use hurricane rated windows and doors? Why deal with power outages, when you can have an automated "standby" generator that will switch on as soon as the power goes off without you even being there! Think of the many power outages we experience in SW Florida. If you're not home and the power is out for awhile, an automatic generator can save money (refrigerated foods) and worry.

The permanent generator unit is installed outside the house and resembles an air conditioning unit in size. When deciding on the correct generator size, our subcontractor, Paul Russel from AMP Electric, works with our clients to determine how many items they would like to have operated by the generator. For the most part, they will choose not to run the entire house, but will choose specific lighting, fans, one A/C unit (if they have more than one) and the refrigerator. Enough to keep them comfortable and out of the dark.

A gas operated automatic standby generator is permanently installed by Paul and then hooked up to the gas line or tank by the gas company. It will turn itself on once a week for about 20 minutes to make sure it stays lubricated and keeps a charge. This will happen at a preselected time to make sure the homeowner is home at that time.

The generator monitors the flow of electricity from the power company, in the event of a storm power outage it automatically detects the loss of power and safely disconnects the utility line and switches to generator power within seconds. When the power is restored the system is reversed and the generator returns to standby mode.

If you would prefer using a portable generator, a dedicated generator outlet can be pre-wired for a manual installation. Just roll out your portable unit and plug it in! It would be less costly, but would involve your being there at the time of the outage.

Either way, be prepared to make what could be a very difficult time, not only manageable, but comfortable, too!

And now a word from our homeowners...

"We first went to three of the best and most experienced builders of Charlotte County. Our lots and basic house plan was described and all the builders came up with a bid.

Keith Towles was the only one with a detailed explanation and cost summary for our proposed home. By detailed, I mean every facet of the construction was explained with a cost analysis from each of his sub-contractors. By the way, he works with the best and none take shortcuts.

Keith was very patient and courteous with us throughout the project. We changed our design a few times before construction and Keith worked very patiently with us on these changes.

Preliminary cost proposals for all facets of construction were adhered to throughout the project. Very comforting when you are on a fixed budget.
One major point that impressed us throughout the project was when something didn't look right or wasn't finished right, it was redone correctly - all without being asked to. That is impressive. This is a house I know was built correctly . A house we are very proud of.

Thank you Keith for a job well done!!"
