April 17, 2012 marked the beginning of a new journey for Debbie Willliams confirming a diagnosis of breast cancer that would require a lumpectomy and radiation. With an unwavering faith, Debbie refused to let the enemy, stress and fear lessen her faith in God. Although she had no insurance, she firmly believed that God would provide for her. He did, miraculously and superabundantly.
The Rose, a local non-profit, sponsored Debbie. She found herself directed to Dr. Jamie Terry with Texas Breast Specialists. Dr. Terry not only performed the surgery at a lesser rate along with the anesthesiologist, but acted as a strong patient advocate. The Rose also directed her to someone in Baytown who would not charge Debbie for radiation if she could pay for the surgery. The hospital bill that should have cost Debbie over $30,000 ended up $3100!
Debbie believes that God mapped out her journey. She said, "God enveloped me in is His hands...and took care of me the entire time." This allowed her to be strong, calm and fulfilled her "longing to inspire others." During her radiation she was able to give back by baking for the staff with who looked forward to her visits and her amazing calmness. Her low heart rate fascinated the nurses, and Debbie attributes it to listening to praise & worship music to, from and during her treatments.
Today, Debbie is a member of the Methodist Hospital Medical Center ROAS group. She enjoys meeting others like her, and the opportunity it offers her to help them. The group also provides support and tools as Debbie begins finding her "new normal." At a slower pace, she is back making "upcycled" crafts (Cowboy boots into purses and sock monkeys) and homemade jellies and jams sold at craft shows. She works alongside her daughter, Amy, who makes teen jewelry and was a solid fixture of support to her mother from day one.
When asked what scripture helped her the most, she quoted Proverbs 3:5-6, "Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind. Do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will make direct and make straight and make plain your paths."
