What We've Been Up to in 2013:

On Monday, January 28th ROAS granted its first Angels of Assistance Scholarship. Pictured left is Julie Gibson from the Faithbridge Methodist Group with her facilitator Brenda Ballard. ROAS could not have been more pleased to award Julie and her family some help during this difficult time.

If you, or you know of someone, who is in need of a scholarship (about $200 or less) to cover a need that cannot be paid for due to the variety of financial hardships that come with breast cancer, please email or have them email jill.schoeffler@gmail.com for an application.

The Methodist Hospital Willowbrook ROAS hosted the final Pink Ribbons Fleece Blanket Project on Saturday, January 26th. They packaged with care and prayer the finished blankets embroidered with "Faith, Hope & Love" and made an additional 20, totaling about 80 blankets to be given to breast cancer patients from various hospitals in and around Houston. ROAS & future recipients thank Wanda Johnson, the Willowbrook facilitator, for commandeering and completing this meaningful project!

ROAS was honored by Houston's First Baptist Church to participate in their 2013 Health & Fitness Fair. Pictured is Madelyn Garza, St. Joseph group member and The Methodist Hospital Medical Center Communications Coordinator. ROAS offered breast health education materials and group session information to several hundred attendees.

February Nutrition Nugget:

A Quick and Easy Dessert Recipe with NO REGRETS!

This recipe is healthy, tasty & easy-to-prepare! It uses chia seeds, a gelatinous plant food that helps draw out toxins from the liver and pass them into the colon for excretion. Chia seeds are high in omega-3 and make you feel full & satisfied. They also provide calcium, fiber & protein.

Chia Seed Pudding (2 servings)

* 1 Cup Almond or Coconut Milk (Plain or Vanilla)

* 1 Tablespoon Raw Honey or Stevia (to taste)

* 4 Teaspoons Chia Seeds

* 1 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon

In a large bowl, combine all of the ingredients and stir well. Pour the mixture into 2 small dishes and refrigerate until it thickens, about 30 minutes. This is a delicious treat and keeps for up to a week, covered in the fridge.If too thin, add more chia seeds.

 Enjoy!

Jenny Hrbacek, RN
