Dear ROAS friends & supporters,
November gave us all the opportunity to gather with family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving and to acknowledge the people, events, and things in which we are grateful. ROAS counted you, your support and your participation in our organization among our many blessings. |
Finishing Strong in 2012 | 2012 was packed with much excitement for ROAS. ROAS expanded with four new support groups and experienced many "firsts"such as our Spring capital campaign in addition to several locally supported fundraisers and events. Local businesses stepped up to work with ROAS like never before to assist us in helping Survivors access the support they need financially, emotionally and physically.
As we come to the end of 2012, we recognize all of our accomplishments, but we see there is still so much work to do. We need your support and ask that you remember us in your year-end giving and your holiday gift buying. Donations can be made online or you can mail in your support (please refer to website for details). If you would like to make a donation as a holiday gift you can also do so by contacting jill.schoeffler@gmail.com and gift arrangements can then be made. |

Last month ROAS announced the new Angels of Assistance (AOA) program to help breast cancer patients cope with consequential financial repercussions of life after diagnosis. This program will allow patients to apply for a specific need scholarship from ROAS that would offer a solution when no other resource could. The program is still projected to begin early 2013. If you would like to make a donation to this fund, you can do so online or by mail. If the contribution is made online, step 1 is to make the donation via Pay Pal and step 2 is to send a message stating that the donation is for AOA. |
Jenny's Holiday Nutrition Nugget: |
Cocktails Anyone?

As we enter the Christmas season, It is so important that you be armed with knowledge when making drink selections at parties. Unfortunately, cancer does not take a break for the Holidays. With that said, I wanted to share with you the following information about alcohol:
- The American Cancer Society says that 1 alcoholic drink per day can increase your risk of breast cancer by 10 - 12%
- Alcohol breaks down to sugar and reduces oxygenation.
- The body breaks alcohol down to acetaldehyde, an official carcinogen.
- Acetaldehyde inflicts oxidative stress that damages and prevents DNA repair and triggers a pro-inflammatory cascade.
So pass on the alcoholic cocktail and have a refreshing glass of club soda with a twist of lime!
To make a special drink, try freezing organic fruit juice in ice cube trays. You can even add diced pieces of fruit in the cubes. Drop a few of the frozen cubes into your club soda. Enjoy!!!
Merry Christmas,
Jenny Hrbacek, RN |
