Thank you for reading the February 2015 issue of the HPCC Certification Newsletter and for your continued support of certification.
presidentMessage from the New President, Susan Koff, MSN, ARNP, GNP-BC, ACHPN, CRRN

Wow! 2014 was a year of change and accomplishments! Working with Hospice and  Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) and Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation (HPNF), we developed a shared vision and mission. We changed our name to Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center (HPCC), previously NBCHPN. We also rebranded our organizations with a common logo, a new website (www.advancingexpertcare.org), and implemented new and enhanced information technology systems.

There is increased interest and demand, by both professionals and lay persons, for quality palliative care and hospice programs and services. We are challenged by regulations, mergers, closures and workforce limitations. There are also enormous opportunities for skilled, knowledgeable, competent hospice and palliative care certificants. HPCC continues to administer seven different certification programs. We have nearly 17,500 certificants!

recertificationHPCC Changes Regarding Recertification

The HPCC Board of Directors and staff have thoughtfully reviewed the Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification (HPAR) process taking into account our commitment of supporting a model of continuing competence as well as feedback expressed by our certificants and employer supporters. Changes have been made to the requirements and the criteria have been expanded to include additional activities, some of which may be accomplished in the workplace. A major enhancement in the HPAR process is the new LearningBuilder platform, which now allows all ACHPN and CHPN HPARs to be completed online.

All HPAR submissions whether online or paper have a new due date of eight (8) weeks prior to the date of expiration of certification to pay the standard fee. Those submitting HPAR in 2015 have until October 31, 2015 to collect points and complete/submit their recertification requirements at the standard fee.

A summary of HPAR requirements are as follows.

  • ACHPNs are required to use the HPAR process for recertification. HPAR includes completion of the Situational Judgment Exercise (SJE) and application submission through LearningBuilder. HPAR requires professional development activities totaling 125 points achieved in the categories of Continuing Education, Scholarly Accomplishments or Professional Contributions. A requirement of 10 points in the categories of Scholarly Accomplishments and/or Professional Contributions is mandatory beginning in 2015.
  • CHPNs may recertify by testing or by HPAR IN 2015. HPAR includes completion of the Situational Judgment Exercise (SJE) and application submission through LearningBuilder. HPAR requires professional development activities totaling 100 points achieved in the categories of Continuing Education, Scholarly Accomplishments or Professional Contributions. A requirement of 10 points in the categories of Scholarly Accomplishments and/or Professional Contributions will be mandatory in 2016. In 2016, testing will no longer be an option for recertification.
  • CHPPNs may recertify by testing or by HPAR IN 2015. HPAR submission is through a paper application. HPAR requires professional development activities totaling 100 points achieved in the categories of Continuing Education, Scholarly Accomplishments and/or Professional Contributions. A requirement of 10 points in the categories of Scholarly Accomplishments and/or Professional Contributions will be mandatory in 2016. In 2016, testing will no longer be an option for recertification.
  • CHPLNs may recertify by testing or by HPAR. HPAR submission is through a paper application. HPAR requires professional development activities totaling 75 points achieved in the categories of Continuing Education, Scholarly Accomplishments and/or Professional Contributions. A requirement of 10 points in the categories of Scholarly Accomplishments and/or Professional Contributions will be mandatory in 2016. In 2016, testing and HPAR will continue to be options for recertification.
  • CHPCAs may recertify by testing or HPAR. HPAR submission is through a paper application. HPAR requires professional development activities totaling 125 points achieved in the categories of Continuing Education, Scholarly Accomplishments and/or Professional Contributions. A requirement of 10 points in the categories of Scholarly Accomplishments and/or Professional Contributions will be mandatory in 2016. In 2016, testing and HPAR will continue to be options for recertification.
  • CHPNAs continue to recertify by testing.
  • CPLCs will begin to recertify in 2017. The requirements for the CPLC HPAR are currently under development and CPLC certificants will be notified once they are available.

certifiedCertified Nurses Day
Certified Nurses Day is celebrated March 19th, the birthday of Margretta "Gretta" Madden Styles. Known as the "Mother of Nurse Credentialing", Gretta Styles was the architect of the first comprehensive study of nursing credentialing in the 1970s.  She served as President of the American Nurses  Association, the International Council of Nurses, the California Board of Registered Nursing, and the American Nurses Credentialing Center.  Greta Styles' legacy is the powerful and growing role of board certification in contributing to high standards of patient care.

Make Certified Nurses Day a special day of recognition to celebrate certified nurses across the country who contribute to the advancement of nursing  professionalism and to higher standards and better outcomes in patient health.  Consider honoring your certified nursing team members with a certification pin.  Pins are available for purchase for all certificants!
