Farewell Message from President Kathie Kobler, MS, APN, PCNS-BC, CHPPN
|
Something quite humbling happened to me this afternoon as I supported parents hearing news of their unborn baby's serious medical condition. Per this couple's request, their 3 year old daughter remained with them during our conversation. As the neonatologist paused, giving parents time to take in their baby's poor prognosis, I watched their little girl reach up to touch her mother's face with an expression of gentle concern. Then, quite suddenly, she turned to me, extending her small hand my way. As our fingers touched, the kind, wise-beyond-her-years look in her eyes struck me to the core. She continued to hold my hand

2014 - A Year in Review for HPCC
|
HPCC continues to be busy with lots of changes throughout 2014! We continue to be the ONLY nursing specialty offering certification to all members of the team (APRNs, RNs, Pediatric RNs, LP/VNs, and NAs) as well as administrators and professionals in perinatal loss care.
Let's reflect on some highlights of 2014.
Throughout 2014- HPCC (formerly NBCHPN) Participates in Certified Nurses are Everywhere Campaign
You know-but do your patients and their families know?
Certified nurses and advanced practice nurses have demonstrated their knowledge through a rigorous examination - a process which includes qualifying by meeting practice or education eligibility criteria and then maintaining their credential through reassessment of that knowledge throughout their career
- Certified nurses choose to seek out certification - demonstrating their expertise, knowledge and commitment
- National certification is the only way to have nursing specialty knowledge validated by an impartial third party
- Certified nurses must maintain their core specialty knowledge base and keep up with the changes in health care through ongoing targeted education and continuing competency assessments
HPCC is pleased to be part of the consumer awareness campaign: Certified Nurses are Everywhere!
January 2014- New Mission and Vision
In January 2014, the Hospice and Palliative Nursing Association (HPNA), Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation (HPNF) and the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN, now HPCC) Boards held a Joint Board Retreat. This is the first time in the history of the three organizations that the Boards have met jointly. The goals of the retreat were

 Recertification in 2015
|
 |
Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification (HPAR) is renewal through contact hours and professional development activities. HPAR for ACHPNs and CHPNs is now an online submission process only, through software known as LearningBuilder. The process and point requirements have been updated.
HPAR for CHPPNs, CHPLNs, and CHPCAs continues as a paper process.
In 2015, all ACHPNs must renew by the HPAR method. CHPNs, CHPPNs, CHPLNs, and CHPCAs have the option to submit an HPAR application or sit for the exam.
NOTE: The submission date and accrual period for points for 2015 HPAR has also been extended. The period in which you can earn points for 2015 renewal is January 1, 2011 through the time that you submit your application. The deadline for HPAR submission is October 31, 2015 for the standard recertification fee. If you collect points and/or submit your application during the extended deadline period between November 1 and December 31, 2015, an additional application fee will be assessed.
CHPNA renewal is by exam only.
All details for each program are found at www.goHPCC.org
under Competence, then Continuing Competence.

HPNF 2014 Certification Scholarship Recipient
Congratulations to Akiko Morimoto, RN, BSN, CHPN. RN Case Manager at Silverado Hospice in Irvine, CA. She received an HPNF Certification Scholarship at the CHPN level. Akiko shares:
"Than k you so much for selecting me as a scholarship recipient. It is a great honor in my nursing career! In 2013, I left hospice nursing for a year and quickly became regretful. I decided to take the CHPN exam in March 2014, studied hard, and passed. Right after becoming a CHPN, I was able to return to hospice nursing. Studying for the exam and reading case studies reminded me of the time when I was working with team disciplines to take care of patients and families. It also made me think how I could improve my nursing skills in the future. Now that I am certified, I feel more confident when taking care of patient's and family's needs, educating them, and making their needs met. I am often asked by patients and families what CHPN on my ID tag stands for. I proudly answer, "Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse", and I can see them feel confident in me."
The mission of HPNF is to advance expert care in serious illness. HPNF supports the professional development of HPNA members and HPCC certificants by providing scholarships for education, conferences and professional certification along with nursing research grants and leadership awards. HPNF depends on the generous spirit of individuals, families, organizations and corporations to fund this program of scholarships, grants and awards. We hope that we can count on your financial support. For more information and to donate, please visit www.goHPNF.org.
