Congratulations to These PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators! 

Lesley McClendon of Shiloh Middle School (l) and Ann Kohler of South Forsyth High School (r) were selected at PBS Learning Media Digital Innovators. They will be part of a group of 100 educators from across the country who will develop strategies for delivering best practices in digital education that can be immediately applied to classrooms. They will also receive exclusive professional development from PBS LearningMedia, including virtual training and resources that they will be able to bring home to their school.

Lesley McClendon has the additional honor of being named one of the top 16 "Lead PBS Digital Innovators" and will attend the PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators Summit this summer at PBS Headquarters in Washington, D.C.! NOVA "Why Sharks Attack" - NOVA teams up with leading shark experts in Australia and the United States to discover the science behind the great white's hunting instincts. Do sharks ever target humans or is each attack a tragic case of mistaken identity? With shark populations around the world plummeting, scientists race to unlock the secrets of these powerful creatures of the deep in their quest to save people -- and sharks.  Airs Wednesday, May 7th @ 9PM. 


NOVA beaverNATURE "Leave It to Beavers" - A growing number of scientists, conservationists and grass-roots environmentalists have come to regard beavers as overlooked tools when it comes to reversing the disastrous effects of global warming and world-wide water shortages. Using their skills as natural builders and brilliant hydro-engineers, beavers are being recruited to accomplish everything from finding water in a bone-dry desert to recharging water tables and coaxing life back into damaged lands.  Wednesday, May 14th @ 8PM.

 

GEORGIA GREATS:  DEAN RUSK - At the Heartbeat of History tells the story of America's second longest serving secretary of state who was destined to play a key role in the 1960s during the Berlin Crisis, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War. Born into poverty in Cherokee County, Georgia, Rusk rose to the ultimate halls of power but never forgot his roots. Premieres Monday, May 19th @ 7:30PM.

 

NATURE "The Gathering Swarms" - This program looks at some of the most extraordinary swarms on the planet, including a view from inside a locust swarm, mayflies along the Mississippi, 17-year cicadas, and brine fly hatches over Lake Victoria. Wednesday, May 21st @ 8PM.

Bremen Jews Jewish

Dr. Adam Mendelsohn, Associate Professor of Jewish Studies at College of Charleston, will be presenting the often untold story in Civil War history - how Jews played an important role in outfitting both Union and Confederate forces. Their efforts laid the groundwork for ready made clothes and future generations of Jews to flourish in the garment industry. Friday, May 4 @ 2 p.m. at The Breman. 

 

2014 Georgia Educator Showcase

Georgia Tech Research Institute's STEM@GTRI and the Georgia Tech Institute for People and Technology (IPaT) are hosting a special event to showcase how our local educators are integrating technology into their classrooms in effective, engaging, and exciting ways to impact student success. During this lively and interactive evening we will see examples from classrooms, media centers, STEM labs, and community events showcasing how students in grades pK-12 are reimagining learning by using technology. Get Active with MLS Challenge

This fun challenge asks kids in grades 3 through 8 to create a campaign with a poster, song, video, or radio announcement that tells other kids how important it is to be active. The deadline is May 16.

 

The Story of the Jews National High School Essay Contest

As part of The Story of the Jews National Education and Outreach Initiative, WNET Education is launching an essay contest to
encourage high school students across America to examine how stories shape our identities. The deadline for the contest is Friday, June 13, 2014

 

 
Whales: Giants of the Deep

Fernbank Museum's new exhibition Whales: Giants of the Deep is a great fit for students and covers topics in life sciences, social studies and geography. A limited number of scholarships are available for qualifying school groups. Contact Fernbank for more information on scholarships.  This exhibit runs through August 24, 2014.
