There is a new Cheerios on the block called Cheerios Protein.
Is it really the healthier version General Mills claims? The Center of Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) doesn't think so. In fact, they are currently filing suit against the mega food company for misleading consumers.
The CSPI cites its side-by-side comparison of Original Cheerios and Cheerios Protein showing that there is not much more protein in the Cheerios Protein than the Original Cheerios. "Rather than protein, the principal ingredient tha distinguishes Cheerios Protein from Cheerios is sugar," the suit says.
For a 200 calorie serving, the CSPI found a minor difference of only .7 grams of protein between the 2 Cheerios cereals (6.6 g in Cheerios Protein Oats and Honey vs 6g in regular Cheerios). Now compare the sugar content for that same 200 calorie serving. There are 2 grams of sugar in the Original Cheerios vs. a whopping 16 grams of sugar in the Cheerios Protein. That translates to 4 teaspoons of sugar per serving! "Healthy" Cheerios Protein also has the distinction of having the most sugar out of the other varieties such as Apple Cinnamon Cheerios, Fruity Cheerios and Chocolate Cheerios.
Keep in mind that even that serving of the Original Cheerios with low sugar still has about 30 grams of carbs, which just breaks down into sugar.
Why is sugar a bad way to start your day? This is because it floods through your body quickly and whatever is not used right away (odds are--most of that!), just goes into your cells and gets stored as fat. Then, about an hour later, you're starving for more food because you never got nutrients to satisfy your body
Stay away from our brain-washing marketing that tells us we should have cereal for breakfast. The
best alternative is to start your day with
REAL protein such as organic eggs with organic bacon or even plain organic yogurt topped with real fruit. Add my favorite
quick green drink chock filled with everything your body needs to start your day off right, and you have the perfect breakfast. We even have a pretty sweet deal for all of you
if you act today.
