What is the Best Gift of Love?

Love is in the air as Valentine's Day is upon us once again.   Is it about Sweethearts, Sweeties or more about Sweets?  Check out these sugar-sweet Valentine's Day fun facts:

  • The #2 Valentine's Day gift given last year was candy of 47% of those surveyed.  The #1 gift given was a Valentine's card of 52% of those surveyed.
  •  Chocolate and candy sales reach profits of $1,011 billion during Valentine's season last year.
  • 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine's Day this year.
  • About 8 billion candy hearts will be produced this year; that's enough candy to stretch from Rome, Italy to Valentine, Arizona 20 times and back again.
  • 24.3 pound of candy per capita were consumed by Americans in 2009.

Those numbers are not for the faint of heart but are very sweet to the candy manufacturers.  Why do we need so much candy to say "I Love You."

This holiday of "love" has even shifted to a love affair with candy and chocolate for children that rivals Halloween.  Kids used to just love exchanging sweet little cards saying, "Owl Be Your Valentine," or perhaps with the cat on the card wishing a "Purrrrrfect Valentine's Day."  Now, the classroom cards seem to have to accompany cookies, candy and lots of good kisses--  the definition of good kisses being the ones made of chocolate.  The end result seems to be a lot of hyper children during the day succumbing to meltdowns when they crash later that night.

For us slightly older kids, is candy the sweetest gift?  For many, it may seem to be.  However, I think I'll stick with the gift that lasts- one that can be worn around the neck, wrist or even on one's feet, but not on the thighs.  Mostly, I love having a laugh over a funny card.  Find that sweet gift that feeds the soul for those you want to celebrate this special day of Love with.

How will you feed your soul on Valentine's Day?  Let's have a conversation  Jill the Health Coach FB page
