Calvert County Business Appreciation Week

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) and the Department of Economic Development (DED) celebrate Business Appreciation Week annually to showcase and celebrate local businesses. This year Business Appreciation Week (BAW) will be May 5-9 and will feature special events and activities to thank businesses of all sizes for their contributions to the county's economy and quality of life.

 

This year's theme, "Celebrating the Spirit of Entrepreneurship," recognizes the companies that show the grit, determination, perseverance and passion to succeed. The week will include special events, workshops, networking activities and personal visits with county business owners by the BOCC and staff from Calvert County Government agencies.

Monday, May 5

  • 12:30-7:30 p.m., "Celebrating Entrepreneurship - Building Blocks for Success" conference for small business professionals and entrepreneurs. Featuring workshops on business start-up, business financing and marketing development. This conference will also include an expo featuring small business resource providers and wrap up with a networking reception.

On Friday, May 9, Shark Tank will hold an open casting call at the Franklin P. Perdue School of Business at Salisbury University in partnership with the School of Business and 47 ABC (WMDT).  Entrepreneurs will be given the opportunity to do a one-minute pitch of their business/product/idea.
  
The taping will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Perdue Hall, South Salisbury Boulevard (Business Route 13), Salisbury, Md.
  
Entrepreneurs should bring a completed application packet. The packet, along with business advice and Q&A interviews with the Sharks, can be found online.

Calvert: You are Beautiful

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) announces that nominations are now being accepted for the annual Calvert You Are Beautiful Volunteer Awards.

 

This project recognizes individuals whose volunteer service improves the quality of life for Calvert County citizens and visitors.

Nominated volunteers might be a tour guide at a museum or historic landmark, someone who organizes a local fair, festival or parade, or the person committed to making a difference by giving generously of their time to hospices, hospitals, homeless and other social service agencies. All nominees must be residents of Calvert County.

 

Nomination forms are available online at www.ecalvert.com or by calling the Department of Economic Development at 410-535-4583. Completed nomination forms should be returned to Calvert You Are Beautiful c/o Katie Brittain, Department of Economic Development, Courthouse, Prince Frederick, 20678. Applications must be postmarked or hand delivered to the Department of Economic Development by July 11, 2014.

 

All Calvert County nominees will be honored at a local awards ceremony sponsored by the BOCC in fall 2014; one special nominee will be chosen as the volunteer of the year.

In this practical, hands-on course, an e-commerce expert will show you how search engine optimization (SEO) works and how to track your site/s performance using Web analytics. You will understand how to use online advertising, e-mail marketing, and social media (including blogs) to drive business to your Web site.

 

Small Business Marketing on a Shoestring (SBC-9020)

Build your own customized marketing plan step-by-step, discover how to attract your target audiences, entice customers to buy your product or service, and keep buyers coming back for more. Master cost-effective strategies including strategic partnerships, local marketing, search engine optimization, social networking, e-mail marketing, lead generation, and niche marketing. Get tips on evaluating your tactics, tracking your results, and fine-tuning your approach so it gets better every year. Best of all, the small business marketing strategies you will learn will fit into any budget--and some are even free!

 

Performing Payroll in Quickbooks 2012 (SBC-9000)

This hands-on course teaches you how to use the payroll feature in QuickBooks to create paychecks, pay tax liabilities, and generate dazzling reports with little effort. You will go step-by-step through the process of setting up your payroll system, mastering skills including creating an entry for a new employee, tracking time and job cost data, generating required forms and reports, and accessing information on the Internal Revenue Service web site.
