End Hunger WORKS is an exciting work force development initiative from End Hunger In Calvert County, created with the vision of bringing quality and sustainable employment opportunities to the residents of Calvert County.

 

End Hunger WORKS is a collaboration of businesses and organizations working together to provide career opportunities that help move individuals from dependency to self-sufficiency. 

The Culinary Training Program is a FREE 9-week program available to unemployed or under-employed Calvert County residents who are interested in a career in the food service industry. This industry is projected to grow at least 7% every year through 2018 (The Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Graduates of the Culinary Training Program receive National Restaurant Certification as well as FREE career placement assistance and their very own set of knives.

Classes are free to qualified applicants.

Seeking Captains and Crew for the Dee of St. Mary's
  
 

 

Have you ever wanted to captain or crew an iconic skipjack? Come and join the crew of the
Dee of St. Mary's at the Calvert Marine Museum! Join us for an information session on Tuesday, April 9 at 5:00 p.m. in the boat basin.

 

No prior sailing experience is necessary for crew as training sessions will be conducted on board. We'll cover the basics of sailing a classic skipjack, as well as handling weather and accommodating passengers. Captains who are rated as Masters with sailing endorsement are encouraged.

Huntingtown Master Plan and Zoning Ordinance
  

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) and the Calvert County Planning Commission are seeking public comment on proposed amendments to the Huntingtown Master Plan and Zoning Ordinance. Two upcoming events will give residents opportunities to learn more and offer input.

 

An informational meeting Wednesday, March 26, 7 p.m., at Huntingtown High School will offer details on the proposed amendments. The BOCC and the Planning Commission will then hold a joint public hearing on the amendments Tuesday, April 1, 7 p.m., also at Huntingtown High School, where official public comment will be solicited.

 

Proposed Huntingtown Master Plan and Zoning Ordinance changes could modify the extent and location of the wooded buffer along the town center's eastern boundary, setbacks from roads, and setbacks for principal structures and accessory structures. At the March 26 informational meeting, county staff will present the amendment options and be available to answer questions.Oral comments for the official public record may only be provided at the April 1 public hearing. Rabies Clinics
  

The Calvert County Health Department is sponsoring rabies clinics in the coming weeks, offering free rabies vaccinations for county pets.

 

Free clinics will be held at Northern High School, 2950 Chaneyville Road, Owings, on Saturday, April 5; Huntingtown High School, 4125 Solomons Island Road, Huntingtown, on Saturday, April 12; and Patuxent High School, 12485 Southern Connector Blvd., Lusby, on Saturday, May 3.

 

Clinics will be open from 10 a.m. to noon. Proof of prior vaccination is required to receive the three-year vaccine. Eligible pets include cats, dogs and ferrets in carriers or on leashes and muzzled if necessary. Feral or stray animals cannot be accommodated.

 

Calvert County pet licenses will also be available at the rabies clinics. Pet licenses are $7 for spayed or neutered pets (proof required) and $20 for those not spayed or neutered.

 

 

 

Calvert County Historic Preservation Awards

Does someone in your community do a great job of recording its history and memories of longtime residents? Has a homeowner you know completed an impressive restoration project?

 

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners wants to recognize the people who have worked to preserve Calvert County heritage and historic properties with the 26th annual Calvert County Historic Preservation Awards.

  

There are three categories of awards to recognize outstanding contributions to the preservation of county heritage: project awards, service awards and awards for preservation education.

 

Projects eligible for recognition this year must have been completed by Jan. 1, 2014. Nomination forms are available at the Department of Community Planning and Building, County Services Plaza, 150 Main Street, Prince Frederick; the Calvert County Historical Society, 70 Church Street, Prince Frederick; and at Calvert Library locations. Forms can also be downloaded from the Calvert County website at www.co.cal.md.us/historic  Nominations must be submitted no later than Friday, May 2, 2014. The commissioners will present the awards on Tuesday, May 20, 2014
