SMADC Funding Match for Maryland Ag-Tourism Sign Program

The Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC) is pleased to announce funding in support of Maryland's new Agricultural Tourism Sign Program for approved Southern Maryland farms.

The Ag-Tourism Sign Program permits highway signs that direct the public to approved ag-tourism farms. Currently, the program is in a pilot phase in Charles County. The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA), with the cooperation of Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA), will approve farms meeting the ag-tourism criteria and the number and location of signs. Counties must agree to participate in the program.

The program guidelines are still being modified to address lessons learned from the pilot program. At present, the minimum eligibility criteria for a working farm to participate in this program requires the following: farms must be open to customers and tourists for at least six months of the year; open at least four days a week and at least six hours a day for the on-site sale of local agricultural products; have an established educational tour that can be provided by a knowledgeable guide upon request; host public events, such as festivals, fairs or workshop; provide both educational tours and events.

SMADC will make available up to $1,500 in matching funds for the purchase and installation of signs that have been approved by SHA and MDA. Funds may not be applied to the application or maintenance fees. The funding is for up to three farms each in Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Prince George's and St. Mary's counties.  Funds will be available until April, 2014 on a first-come, first serve basis. For more information concerning SMADC funds you may email staff at
info@smadc.com and for information concerning the program you may email Stone Slade with MDA at stone.slade@maryland.gov. To download the complete program criteria, visit the news and announcement page at www.SMADC.com

Participate in the proposed expansion of Dominion

blurred-business-shake.jpg

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners is pleased to announce the unveiling of a new website to help local businesses participate in the proposed major expansion of the Dominion Cove Point LNG facility in Lusby, Md. If the project is approved it is expected to bring 3,000 jobs to Maryland at the peak of construction and promises to be one of the largest construction projects in Maryland's history. Construction is expected to begin in 2014 with export operations in 2017.

Dominion has hired IHI/Kiewit Cove Point, a joint venture of IHI E&C and Kiewit Energy Company, as its engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor. IHI/Kiewit Cove Point will be responsible for the EPC of the new facility. IHI/Kiewit will be providing many opportunities to local, diverse and/or small businesses in the region.

The website, www.1covepoint.com, was created by IHI/Kiewit for suppliers, subcontractors, construction product retailers and local businesses that would like the opportunity to work with IHI/Kiewit on the project. It also includes information about the status of the project and contract awards. The new website is currently accepting registration for material suppliers, subcontractors and service providers that have an interest in being considered for the various opportunities at the Cove Point Project.

Information on the project can be found online at http://www.dom.com/business/gas-transmission/cove-point/liquefaction.jsp

Trailer Parts!

The sign out front says "Trailer Parts." Inside, there is so much more.

Centreville Manufacturing Inc. now has a Prince Frederick retail location where the company sells just about any part that could be needed for a trailer. The retail location is just one component of the entire company; the original factory location makes custom trailers for everything from speed cameras to highway signs. Owner John Doran employs 25 people at locations in Centreville, Md., Annapolis and now Prince Frederick.

"When you see a trailer on the side of the road being held up by a rock, you know those people need a place to buy trailer parts," he said. "If somebody breaks down, I would say the odds are good that we've got what they need on the shelves."

The Prince Frederick store is at 514 N. Solomons Island Road. For more information about Centreville Manufacturing Inc., visit www.centrevilletrailer.com or call 410-414-3625.

Help out Wounded Warriors Gift Drive

woman_soldier_flag.jpg

This is our Mary Kay unit's sixth year of the Wounded Warrior's gift drive at the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC). Every year we visit the Warriors we feel we have been blessed to spend time with those who have served our country and sacrificed to keep us free. We are privileged to spend an entire afternoon visiting with the Warriors and their families. Many have been there more than a year and they remember us when we return.

I am writing to ask that you make a donation of holiday gift sets to brighten a serviceman's life, their families, help ease the pain of being alone, missing their families and for many dealing with life altering injuries. Our Mary Kay unit is working with NNMC to not only provide gifts for the troops but also to provide gifts for the troops to give their own families and caregivers. Your generous donation will help bring a smile of thanksgiving to the face of those who have served our Country.

Our Mary Kay Unit will personally visit the troops to deliver the gifts, share the holiday joy and lift their spirits throughout the month of December!  The men will receive Shaving Sets and the women will receive Perfume Sets. You are welcome to include a personal note which we will use as a gift tag for each gift you purchase. This is a wonderful way to show your support for our troops while sharing the holiday spirit.

There is no feeling in the world like giving a gift to someone who was sure they were forgotten or who will be spending the holidays without their family. We cannot help but believe you too will be blessed by participating in this endeavor.

All proceeds will go to the troops. Our goal is to have all 800 gifts purchased and wrapped by November 15th, so that we may start visiting the Troops in the beginning of December.
