BBG Renewal Letters

Being a member of the BBG is one of the best investments you can make in this economy. We provide so much value, and give back so much to our communities. We appreciate you and the importance of our small, locally-owned businesses.

Last week, we began sending out renewal notices to those whose memberships have already expired or are about to expire this quarter. We encourage you to please return those renewals ASAP. You can also easily renew - or join - the BBG online using any bank or credit card through Paypal. http://www.baybusinessgroup.org/join-us/

On the new BBG web site, the searchable BBG Directory (which also comes up in Google and other search engines when someone looks for you) still contains the names of all members up for renewal. We will give everyone a grace period. However, we plan to update the directory on Feb. 1 and remove those whose memberships have expired. Thanks so much in advance for your quick responses and continued support of the BBG.
Join a BBG Committee!

With a new year, we're looking at regrouping and re-energizing our BBG Committees. Please take a look at this BBG Committee list  http://www.baybusinessgroup.org/about-the-bay-business-group/bbg-committees/ and let us know your availability in the coming year. Please let us know if you want to continue on the same committee, join a new committee, or whatever! We encourage every member to join at least one committee and help us give back. We need - and greatly appreciate - your ideas and help!

Current committees are:
- Tech Committee
- Networking & Special Events
- Membership Committee
- Fundraising Committee
- Communications
- BBG Scholarship Committee

Did you get a flu shot? You better go do it!

The worst part of influenza season is here, and the Calvert County Health Department is offering the flu vaccine to help combat this potentially deadly illness.

Vaccines are offered at the Calvert County Health Department Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and on Monday from 1 to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $20. The vaccine is also offered at most doctors' offices and at many county pharmacies and supermarkets.

We are entering into the worst part of the flu season. Over the past two weeks, we have started to see a significant increase in influenza-related emergency room visits at Calvert Memorial Hospital. Typically, the greatest number of cases occur from mid-January through February. In an average year, influenza is the eighth leading cause of death in the U.S. (36,000 deaths) and leads to almost a quarter-million hospitalizations.

This year, the number of people who suffer severe illness or die from complications of the flu is likely to be higher than average. The first part of this year's flu season indicates the viral strain currently circulating is more dangerous than typical. The good news is that this season's vaccine is an excellent match for the strain and should do a very good job of keeping people healthy. However, once someone receives vaccination, it takes two to three weeks to boost his or her immune system. This makes it extremely important to get vaccinated as soon as possible to maximize the chance of protection.
