Volunteer with the OOA

Three Calvert County Office on Aging programs are now in need of volunteers who are interested in serving our seniors.

Teach Walking Classes: Volunteers are needed to teach free "Walking with Ease" classes at locations in Lusby and North Beach. The daytime classes are designed to help people living with arthritis better manage their pain and/or people without arthritis who want to make walking a regular habit. The one-hour classes meet three times per week for six weeks and are designed to be relaxing and enjoyable. Each session includes health-related discussion topics and self-paced group walks. Volunteer leaders receive free training and ongoing supervision by program staff.

Help with Technology Needs: Technical support volunteers are needed at the Southern Pines Senior Center in Lusby to set up a small computer lab, evaluate computers and load software. Volunteers should be willing to assist with answering computer-related questions and periodically offer free basic computer classes to residents age 50 and over.Volunteers should be knowledgeable of basic computer concepts and software functions, including the Internet and Microsoft Office Suite; have a pleasant demeanor, excellent interpersonal skills and patience in coaching senior citizens not familiar with basic computer operation; and be at least 18 years of age.

Lead Living Well Workshops: Living Well Workshops help those who are living with ongoing health conditions like asthma, obesity and diabetes. Workshop leaders facilitate the six-week program for groups of 12 to 15 people with each weekly meeting lasting 2.5 hours. Leaders will co-facilitate with another leader. All teaching is done from a detailed manual. No previous knowledge of health issues is necessary. Those interested should have an ongoing health problem, be comfortable with public speaking, be committed to helping others with chronic conditions and be willing to facilitate at various locations throughout Calvert County.

Leaders will attend training on April 24 and 25 and May 1 and 2, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at Calvert Pines Senior Center in Prince Frederick. To learn more about these opportunities, contact Program Manager Keri Lipperini at 410-535-4606 or 301-855-1170 or via email at lipperka@co.cal.md.us

From the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development: Do you have customers or employees in the European Union? There are new standards you must be aware of in order to comply with EU Data Privacy Protection legislation.

As a US company that receives personal data from customers that are European citizens, including payment information, you must have policies in place that meet European privacy protection standards. What are these standards? How can your company comply?
