February BBG Monthly Meeting will be Wednesday, February 15th at 8am at Herrington Harbour

 

February 15th our speaker will be Maria Dorsett, Business Retention Specialist, Department of Economic Development, Calvert County.  She'll be telling us about the latest programs that Economic Development has and is involved in to help businesses!  We'll be at Herrington Harbour at 8am.
 
March 21st our speaker will be Connie O'Dell, Chair, Chesapeake Beach Stars & Stripes Committee.  This is the group that is organizing the first annual Stars and Stripes celebration of Memorial Day. We'll be at the Rod 'N' Reel at 8am.

 

Kiss and Tell - Love your Library! 

 

Celebrate Love Your Library Month with Friends of Calvert Library!

 

The Friends are supplying a chocolate KISS for you and postcards that you can send to legislators to TELL them what you love about your library. They will even get the postcards to the legislators for you.
Postcards will be available from February 11-18 at all Calvert Library locations and the Friends will be manning a table all day on Saturday, February 11 at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.

 

ALSO there's still time to read the book before Monday for the Twin Beaches sponsored Book Club! 

 

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson. The unlikey romance and travails of a retired local major with a foreign shop keeper is touching and charming. Sure to be a fun discussion the day before Valentine's Day!

With spring just around the corner, it is time once again to let journalists know what's new around the Chesapeake Bay. 

 

The AAACCVB will be compiling a round-up news release that talks about events, attractions, accommodations, restaurants, retail establishments, and services that are new to the Chesapeake Bay area. If you are affiliated with a new business or an established one that is doing something new, please take a moment to let me know about it.

 

Please include your street address, website address, and phone number for publication. Information received by Wednesday, February 22, will be considered for inclusion in the release that will be disseminated to approximately 700 travel writers, journalists and media outlets. If you have high resolution images that help to further tell your story, please send them to me as well.

Purchase a Brick to Memorialize WWII Service Members 

  

For a limited time, the public may purchase memorial bricks to be placed at the Veterans Patio, located at the WWII "On Watch" Memorial Statue in Solomons.

 

The commemorative bricks are available to memorialize those who served the country during World War II.

 

The cost of each memorial brick is $100 and all contributions are tax deductible. Bricks will be installed in the fall of 2012 and purchasers will be notified when they are available for viewing.Information on the program and an application are available online at www.co.cal.md.us/News/OnWatch.asp  To learn more, contact Melinda Wood at 410-535-1600, ext. 2565.

 

The World War II "On Watch" memorial statue is an 8-foot-tall bronze statue by Maryland artist Antonio Tobias Mendez commemorating the people and work done at the Solomons Amphibious Training Base during World War II. This, the nation's first amphibious training facility, was active from 1942 to 1945 and its effect on the area continues to be felt today. The statue was unveiled in August 2007.
