THANK YOU - from WESLEY HOUSE COMMUNITY CENTER

Dear Knoxville District UMC,

Thank you so very much for your support of Wesley House.  We simply could not be in mission without contributions from generous supporters like you - and we want you to know how much we appreciate you.

Wesley House will continue to be a strong presence in the community and in the lives of children and seniors.  We know we are making a difference and we plan to be in mission for many years to come.

We thank you again for your support and ask that you keep us in your prayers.

Nathan's Note

"I thank my God always for you, because of God's grace that was given to you in Christ Jesus."
(1 Corinthians 1:4 - CEB)

November is the month in which we have a day set aside for giving thanks. (Well, that is the name and intention given to it anyway, regardless of how we have come to use it.) So, I want to take this opportunity to again express my gratitude for the pastors and people of all of our churches, for the many ways you give of yourself for the mission of our Lord Jesus Christ. I will list a few specific ways here, but I know there are so many more. Whether anyone else knows about what you do, be assured that the God who gave you life and a calling to serve others knows and as Jesus taught us "your reward will be great in heaven."
  • Thank you for your faithfulness in daily disciplines that allows you to stay connected to the Holy Spirit who guides your daily living.
  • Thank you for growing in generosity.
  • Thank you for your faithfulness in worshipping, studying and serving together with other Christians so as to support and strengthen each other.
  • Thank you for the ways you battle hate with love, despair with hope and fear with faith.
  • Thank you for those intentional relationships you continue to establish and nurture in order to lead others to know Jesus Christ in their life.
  • Thank you for staying focused on the mission that Christ gave to us.
May we all continue to grow in the Spirit of gratitude, and may we use the time around the day of Thanksgiving to help others stop and say "Thank you" to the God who has blessed us all. Remember, we are blessed to be a blessing. Thank you for the many ways you have blessed me!

Love, Grace & Peace,
Nathan Malone

Update on Helping South Carolina
  • Thanks to all who have donated flood buckets and health kits.  For those churches who are interested in sending a team to help with recovery, you can go to the South Carolina Conference's website www.umcsc.org to get information.  To be sure, continuing to pray for everyone there is most welcomed.
Giving Tuesday
  • On Dec. 1, you are invited to come together with thousands of United Methodists to support the work of Advance projects and missionaries on UMC#GivingTuesday.  And every gift made online through The Advance at www.umcmission.org/give on Dec. 1, 2015 will be matched up to $1 million.  For more information and ideas on how to get involved, go to www.umcmission.org/giving-tuesday/resources.

COMMUNICATIONS RESOURCES GUIDE
The following are updates/resources related to United Methodist Communications (UMCOM)

Rethink Church Materials

The next phase of television commercials for this emphasis will be during the Advent Season. They will begin on November 16. There are outreach and worship materials available, many of which are free of charge. (Some have an order deadline of December 1.) Go to umcom.org/rethinkchurchresources
for more information on how to download or order materials. Some items can be imprinted with local church information. The theme is "Church Can Happen Anywhere." (Watch for new resources at Easter and "Back to School" time each year.

Information from UMCOM related to General Conference will be available at umc.org/gc2016. Related articles and videos are already posted and will continue to be added as information is available (click on view all to see a complete listing). This address will be a helpful one to share and keep for answering questions or finding factual information about General Conference actions.

In addition, there will be a general conference app that will be available beginning later this fall and being expanded between now and General Conference. Its address will be umcgeneralconference2016.

For General Conference and for updates of news related to The United Methodist Church, please subscribe to United Methodist News Service (UMNS) Daily Digest and/or UMNS Weekly Digest. It is also possible to follow UMNS on Facebook and Twitter. All of this is available free of charge and is requested through umcom.org on their news page (click on UMC news on the left-hand column).

Other Resources
Interpreter Magazine is now available in print, digital and e-newsletter formats. It has expanded its target audience to all active United Methodists and will continue to provide resources and study guides on issues of interest to congregational members. Each church is provided 5 free print subscriptions and unlimited digital subscriptions which expire each December. It is possible to subscribe through the umcom.org site.

In addition, there is a Master Subscription Form at umcom.org which gives an option to sign up for various electronic newsletters. The most popular is MyCom which provides practical tips on church communications, outreach, new technology, giving and worship. Other options are UMNS Weekly, Training, Seasonal Daily Devotions, UMNS Daily, Church and Technology, Giving Notes, eHispanic UMC, and Imagine No Malaria.

Imagine No Malaria
Currently, Imagine No Malaria is at 89.1% of the $75 million goal. The campaign ends in 2016. During the time that The United Methodist Church has been helping to address this issue of global health, deaths from malaria have been cut in half. Resources for local churches who might want to help complete the final $7.5 million of the goal can be found at umcom.org/imagine-no-malaria/. There are particular Advent resources. In addition, collection boxes (similar to Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF boxes) are available free of charge for individual use.

MEXICO MEDICAL MISSION TRIP
APRIL 2-10, 2015

Each spring about 50 volunteers from throughout the Holston Conference of the United Methodist church participate in the Mexico Medical Mission, bringing medical care to 2000 or more persons. Our team staffs two rural medical clinics, one in Tatoxcac and one in Ixtepec. These villages are situated in the Northern Sierra Madre Mountains in the State of Puebla. Many congregations throughout the Holston Conference support this mission with volunteers and funding. This short-term team is led by The Rev. Ramon Torres of Cleveland, and Dr. Paul Brown, M.D., of Johnson City and and Anna Kapoor of Johnson City.

Our Mission
We will be going to the villages of Tatoxcac and Ixtepec in the Eastern Sierra Madre. This mountainous corner of the state of Puebla is a picturesque area with many indigenous people who are descendants of the fierce Aztec warriors who fought the Spanish conquerors in 1517. Thankfully, they will receive us as friends who have come to offer health care to the poor of the area. The Methodist Church of Mexico operates a rural clinic in Tatoxcac, and the Methodist congregation of Ixtepec provides space for our work. We will be working alongside Mexican medical professionals who also take time off from work to volunteer their services. Several team members will be deployed from Tatoxcac each day to provide care in nearby rural villages. Daily devotions are an important part of our team meetings. Our group is organized through the United Methodist Church, but we truly welcome all who want to share in this mission of love and service.
