Nathan's Note
Let me begin with a big "Thank you!" to Fountain City United Methodist Church for hosting our District Conference last month. I really appreciate their staff and other leaders for their hospitality. Also, thanks to all who attended. Rev. Wil Cantrell offered us excellent words of challenge and encouragement. A ministry budget of $222,940 was adopted for 2016. This is slightly less than a one percent increase over 2015. District leaders for next year were also elected. I am so thankful for the many dedicated people who serve on our various teams, boards and committees that allow us be in ministry together! I am especially grateful for the encouraging support and work of our District Lay Leader, Brenda Haymore. And of course, I cannot leave out a word of gratitude to Mary Hawkins for all she does as our District Administrative Assistant.
Finally, I want to highly recommend two other books to leaders in all of our churches.
The first is Get Their Name: Grow Your Church By Building New Relationships, by Bob Farr, Doug Anderson and Kay Kotan. Here is a description from the Cokesbury website:
There is hope, and you will find it in these pages. Farr, Kotan and Anderson reveal the ways most churches unwittingly misdirect their reach into the community. The authors show in practical terms how to change the habits of leaders and entire congregations, so that invitation is natural, constant, systemic, genuine, and easy. Get Their Name clearly demonstrates how your church can change, and equips your people to share their faith in a way that is effective, biblical, and transformational.
The other book is Just Say Yes! Unleashing People for Ministry, by Bishop Robert Schnase. Steve Harper, professor and author, recommends the book this way:
"Schnase examines how churches say No, then provides an inspiring and practical look at how they can say Yes. We need this book!"
To put it simply: if every church in the Knoxville District implemented half of what is in these two books, we would turn this whole area and beyond upside down for Christ!

Love, Grace & Peace,
Nathan Malone

NEW GRANT DEADLINE FOR FALL

The Holston Conference Foundation stewards nearly 200 special purpose endowments, scholarships and program grants established by individuals, families, and friends that support specific ministries, churches, and institutions.

Grant Application Deadline is October 15, 2015.

These funds are governed by documents put in place by generous donors and overseen by a grant committee made up of members of the Foundation's Board of Directors and other volunteers who carefully review
applications and evaluate priorities established by the donor.

Should you wish to discuss establishing a fund through a testamentary gift from your estate please contact Paul Bowman or Roger Redding at 865-690-8124.

Susannah's House

Susannah's House has been open one year and already has a waiting list! Their annual budget the first year was close to $390,000. Much remodeling had to be done to accommodate the young mothers and their children. See the website for more information about Susannah House's mission for young addicted mothers.

TWO VITAL NEEDS:
  1. A volunteer grant writer, perhaps recently retired from a grant-writing position. State and federal grants are badly needed to assist  with expenses to maintain the program.
  2. Volunteers who can assist with drop off and take home transportation of patients. Over half the young mothers do not have transportation. Patients currently are from Oak Ridge, Maryville and Knoxville. Requests are waiting from Sevierville for placement in the program.

Call Susannah's House on Monday, Wednesday or Friday if you can help with either need  #1 or #2 stated above. The phone number is 865-200-4759.   www.cokesbury.tv/susannahshouse

COMMUNICATIONS RESOURCES GUIDE
The following are updates/resources related to United Methodist Communications (UMCOM)

Rethink Church Materials

The next phase of television commercials for this emphasis will be during the Advent Season. They will begin on November 16. There are outreach and worship materials available, many of which are free of charge. (Some have an order deadline of December 1.) Go to umcom.org/rethinkchurchresources
for more information on how to download or order materials. Some items can be imprinted with local church information. The theme is "Church Can Happen Anywhere." (Watch for new resources at Easter and "Back to School" time each year.

General Conference 2016
Information from UMCOM related to General Conference will be available at umc.org/gc2016. Related articles and videos are already posted and will continue to be added as information is available (click on view all to see a complete listing). This address will be a helpful one to share and keep for answering questions or finding factual information about General Conference actions.

In addition, there will be a general conference app that will be available beginning later this fall and being expanded between now and General Conference. Its address will be umcgeneralconference2016.

For General Conference and for updates of news related to The United Methodist Church, please subscribe to United Methodist News Service (UMNS) Daily Digest and/or UMNS Weekly Digest. It is also possible to follow UMNS on Facebook and Twitter. All of this is available free of charge and is requested through umcom.org on their news page (click on UMC news on the left-hand column).

Other Resources
Interpreter Magazine is now available in print, digital and e-newsletter formats. It has expanded its target audience to all active United Methodists and will continue to provide resources and study guides on issues of interest to congregational members. Each church is provided 5 free print subscriptions and unlimited digital subscriptions which expire each December. It is possible to subscribe through the umcom.org site.

In addition, there is a Master Subscription Form at umcom.org which gives an option to sign up for various electronic newsletters. The most popular is MyCom which provides practical tips on church communications, outreach, new technology, giving and worship. Other options are UMNS Weekly, Training, Seasonal Daily Devotions, UMNS Daily, Church and Technology, Giving Notes, eHispanic UMC, and Imagine No Malaria.

Imagine No Malaria
Currently, Imagine No Malaria is at 89.1% of the $75 million goal. The campaign ends in 2016. During the time that The United Methodist Church has been helping to address this issue of global health, deaths from malaria have been cut in half. Resources for local churches who might want to help complete the final $7.5 million of the goal can be found at umcom.org/imagine-no-malaria/. There are particular Advent resources. In addition, collection boxes (similar to Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF boxes) are available free of charge for individual use.
