IRA Rollover Expiration On December 31, 2014, the recently passed IRA Rollover expires and with it the opportunity to make a tax-free distribution from your retirement account as a gift to your church, favorite ministry or an organization supported by the Holston Conference Foundation. It works like this. If you are 70½ or older inform your traditional IRA administrators that you wish to make a "qualified charitable distribution" to the Holston Conference Foundation up to $100,000. You may have to fill out and fax back a simple form to the administrator of your IRA, and he or she will need our federal tax ID number (36-216-7731). The administrator cuts the check and sends it directly to the Holston Conference Foundation and we in turn will forward it to the charity or church of your choice. The "fine print" for this gift is: - The check from the financial institution must be postmarked by December 31, 2014.
- You do not pay income tax on this distribution. (There is no charitable deduction on your taxes for the gift but it is offset by not paying income tax.)
- Only IRA holders of the right age can take advantage of this opportunity.
- Traditional IRAs work best for this program-not Roth IRAs, because Roths are taxed differently, and a charitable distribution from a Roth IRA probably offers far less benefit to you the donor.
- Charitable distributions cannot be made from 401(k), 403(b), SEP IRA, or SIMPLE IRA accounts-they don't qualify for this program.
- Supporting organizations and donor-advised funds aren't eligible to receive charitable distributions from IRAs.
This is a great way to set up an endowment honoring or memorializing a loved one or to simply create perpetual funding for your favorite ministry. Your gift may be made directly to your local church or through the Foundation. If you have questions or call 1-865-690-8124.

Finish Strong
In a long-distance race, runners will usually pace themselves because they want to have enough energy "in the tank" near the end to be able to finish strong. Teams in most any sport prepare their game plan and strategize during the game so they can have their best players participating and use their best plays.
If we live long enough, most of us will not finish physically strong. However, spiritually - where life matters most - we can finish our life on this earth stronger than ever. The key is that we are in relationship each day with the Holy Spirit that guides and strengthens us with sanctifying grace. One way to assess your life as you head into a new year is to ask toward what kind of finish you are headed with the preparations you are making?
As we end the year 2014 in the churches of the Knoxville District, I encourage everyone to finish strong as well. Pastors and other church leaders, take responsibility for giving as much of the tithe as possible toward our shared Holston Conference ministry as United Methodists. (Remember, giving toward the tithe for 2014 can continue until January 9.) When we all do our part, we make that much more of a difference in the world for the God we worship.
In addition, be attentive and accurate when filling out those year-end reports. In several areas, those should be easier if you have been consistent in posting your "Vital Signs" information. More importantly, learn from the information in those reports. Where did you improve? Where did you decline? What may have improvement or decline? What can we learn from the numbers that will help us be more effective and fruitful in our ministry?
Thank you so much for the many ways you give of yourself to further the mission of our Lord Jesus Christ! May 2015 be our best year yet in becoming vital congregations who are transforming individuals and communities for Christ!
Love, Grace and Peace to each of you.
Nathan Malone To all of those who have sent gifts, cards and other gestures during this Advent and Christmas Seasons, we are most grateful!
Becca, Matt, Vicki and Nathan Malone
Mission Opportunities:

Way to Go! Way to Give!
Check out the new video message of gratitude each month on the Holston Conference website www.holston.org. (Messages from previous months are also archived there.) These are excellent opportunities to share with the people of your church about the difference they are making in the lives of others.

REZ KIDS
January 18-19 2015
Gatlinburg Convention Center
http://www.rezkidz.com/ for more information
Our Mission is based on Deuteronomy 6:5-7: "And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up." (NLT)
Not only must we love God with all our heart, but we must consistently teach our children about the Love of Christ and make it a priority to be in constant conversation about the gospel message. Our mission is to equip families with the tools they can use to strengthen their faith together.
At Rez Kidz, we dream of parents and their children committing together to make their faith a priority. We dream of boys and girls who light up with excitement when they walk through the door and leave in wonder about a King who loves them. We dream of families committing themselves wholeheartedly to the commands of the Lord. We dream of watching the gospel message change lives, one family at a time.
That is our mission: to share the gospel of Jesus Christ and to encourage, equip, and build-up families as we glorify our Savior.

Important notice concerning a change in the housing reservation procedure for 2015 Annual Conference:
Shortly after the first of the year, letters will be sent out with Annual Conference information to all Annual Conference members-both clergy and lay. The process for making housing reservations has changed, and it is very important that all Conference members be mindful of this change.
There will not be a call in day this year for housing reservations. Letters will be mailed to clergy and lay members the week of January 10, and housing preferences must be sent directly to Lake Junaluska by January 30. Junaluska staff will then hold a random drawing to assign housing. They will contact conference members directly by February 20 to inform them of their housing assignments. After conference members receive word from Junaluska that they have been assigned housing, they will need to send back the housing deposit. No money should be sent with the housing preference request.
If you are a lay member to annual conference or clergy, be on the lookout for this mailing, and do not set it aside thinking there will be a later call-in day.
