HOLSTON CONFERENCE SECRETARIES ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE
Sept. 18-20, 2014
MainStay Inn & Suites, Pigeon Forge, TN
We graciously ask you to encourage and finance your ministry assistant or treasurer to attend the 2014 Holston Conference Secretaries Association (HCSA) annual business meeting and conference, which will be held on September 18-20, 2014 at MainStay Suites in Pigeon Forge. He or she will return renewed and excited about the new tips that will help your office to run more efficiently!
This year we will explore mission opportunities that are available through the Holston Conference, ranging from local church outreach to conference-wide initiatives. A refresher on office finances, such as insurance and pastor worksheets, is also on the agenda, and we will hear from a legal expert regarding information needed on form, photo releases, and other legal documents used in the church. We will also revisit a favorite topic- social media - and discuss best practices for using it effectively in our ministry. And, of course we will participate in hands-on mission project as well as enjoy some fellowship and entertainment.
The HCSA is open to any administrative/secretarial/ministry assistant or treasurer who is employed by the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church, its institutions, agencies, or churches on a full-time, part-time, or volunteer basis.

Partners in Ministry;
The forty days of prayer for transformation are over. I trust that all of you have been seeking God's guidance in better connecting with the people of your community who do not yet have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Obviously, prayer must the foundation for all of our endeavors in this area as we move forward.
The primary issue that has arisen for some is a concern over what is meant by "...we are willing to consider whatever changes might be necessary..." in the Transformation Covenant every church in our District has been asked to consider.
First, let me share what it does not mean:
It does not mean that the Conference or District has some pre-planned changes churches will be asked to make. It does not mean that the Transformation Team, the District Superintendent or any other leader has specific changes in mind for each church.
Here is what it simply means:
Every church is asked to do two things with commitment and compassion -
-
Engage your community. Get to know the people around the neighborhood/community/area of your church. Discover how best to connect with them.
-
Seek the Holy Spirit to guide you in doing what you need to do to connect with the people our Lord has given you to disciple for him.
Any changes you make will be up to you as you do those two things.
The District Transformation Team is available to assist you, especially as you seek to engage your community. May this "Annual Conference year" of 2014-15 be a turning point for all the churches in the Knoxville District in connecting with the people closest to them. And the One who "....became flesh and blood and moved into the neighborhood...." (John 1:14, The MESSAGE) will be most pleased.
Love, Grace & Peace,
Nathan Malone

Ministry Opportunity With KARM
This past February and March, Piney Grove UMC in East Knoxville connected with Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries (KARM) to host about ten homeless men for one night each week. Rev. Larry Anderson was aware of a similar ministry in Nashville called "Room At The Inn." He also knew that during the winter months, there were simply not enough beds for the homeless people in Knoxville, which meant several were left out in the cold. So he encouraged his church to do what they could. They were so blessed in this ministry "experiment" that they have committed to offering it again this winter.
Larry is inviting all of the churches in the Knoxville District to consider this ministry as well. As he put it "If 40 churches in the Knoxville District of the UMC were to commit to hosting one weekend each month from October to November we could free up 400-480 beds per month at KARM. 400 souls would not be turned away during the coldest months of the year and 400 more would receive the love of the Father from the people of Christ."
Each church is invited to consider this ministry and let the district office know by Aug. 14 if you plan to participate. You can contact Larry Anderson at 206-5216 or larryanderson87@comcast.net to get further information about the Piney Grove experience.
