News of Note
Dear ,

Here's the latest news from San Diego and Imperial County community colleges over the summer.
San Diego and Imperial County Community Colleges
Our region's largest provider of higher education will welcome nearly 150,000 students to the 2016-17 academic year on August 22 at San Diego's nine community colleges, and August 15 at Imperial Valley College.
Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District
For the second time, the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District has received a Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award, a national honor recognizing colleges and universities for outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Hispanic students at Cuyamaca College will soon see a significant boost in efforts aimed at guiding them toward obtaining certificates and degrees and transferring to four-year colleges and universities, thanks to a nearly $2.6-million, five-year federal grant.

The athletic program at Grossmont College has been awarded the 2015-16 Chet DeVore Trophy. The award is the highest honor given by the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, which consists of 10 community colleges in the region.

Imperial Valley College
Imperial Valley College students were treated to a free barbecue during the second week of classes.
We like giving back to the students," said Associated Student Government President Christine Bermudez. "It's a good way for them to find out about the clubs and ASG."
Deputies from the Imperial County Sheriff's Department are now patrolling Imperial Valley College in a pilot program to provide onsite security services. Deputies are on campus at all times when classes are in session, and a private security service patrols when the campus is closed.
MiraCosta College
.MiraCosta College will put a $455 million bond measure on the November ballot. MiraCosta has not passed a bond to improve aging buildings since the Oceanside Campus was built in the 1960s. The bond money would be spent on improvements at campuses in Oceanside and Encinitas since many buildings have rusty plumbing, faulty wiring and leaky roofs.
