Nneka Morgan
As a self-described example of a "turn-around story," Nneka Morgan didn't expect to finish high school and never thought that college was an option. She attributes her success to the many teachers and staff that saw her struggle and did all they could to push her in the right direction, knowing that she had the ability to succeed.
A native to St. Paul, Nneka attended Mississippi Creative Arts Magnet, Ramsey Middle and Johnson High School. She classifies her education story as a "turn-around story" because she did poorly in the beginning and, for a while, considered dropping out. In junior high, she was kicked out of school every week. And during freshman year in high school, she even asked the principal to expel her, but the principal wouldn't do it.
"I didn't want to go to school. I didn't enjoy it. I couldn't find my place in high school when I started."
Nneka recalled Gary Whipple, her school guidance counselor and a prior teacher, as being a driving force in keeping her in school and pushing her to excel. He continued to tell her that college was a possibility for her and that maybe she was bored with school because she wasn't being challenged enough. Gary never focused on her history and he never made her feel like a lost cause. He only focused on her potential and what he knew she could accomplish. Read more...
