In November, Kitware wrapped up its 2012 conference season with SC12 and RSNA. At SC12, HPCWire announced their 2012 Readers' and Editors' Choice Awards, with ParaView taking home the honor of Editors' Choice Award for best HPC visualization technology. Four Kitwareans also traveled to RSNA in Chicago, IL to present two tutorials.

We announced a new collaborative project to develop a Visualization Design Environment as part of the DARPA XDATA effort and saw the release of CMake 2.8.10. Amidst all this excitement, our teammates across the Atlantic, Kitware SAS, commemorated their second anniversary with cake and champagne! With this celebratory spirit, we wish you a happy holiday season and a joyful new year!

Best HPC Visualization Technology

The HPCWire Readers' and Editors' choice awards were announced at the annual Supercomputing conference, held in Salt Lake City this year. ParaView, an open-source, multi-platform data analysis and visualization application, was selected as the Editors' Choice for best HPC Visualization Product or Technology. This marks the third consecutive year that Kitware has been recognized by HPCWire.

Berk Geveci, Kitware's Director of Scientific Computing, was at SC12 to receive the award on behalf of the ParaView community, which includes Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Army Research Laboratory, and the National Nuclear Security Administration's Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) Program.

Congratulations to the global ParaView community!

story2CMake 2.8.10.2 Now Available
New Improvements to Kitware's Open-Source, Cross-Platform Build Tool

In November, the CMake team happily announced the release of CMake 2.8.10, with the subsequent release of CMake 2.8.10.2 to address several minor bugs. This release features support for the latest versions of Visual Studio and Xcode, improvements to the target properties, and updates to generator expressions.

One of the significant developments was the improvements to generator expressions. Generator expressions, which are used to introduce conditional statements at generate time rather than at CMake compile time, are now available in more contexts. Additionally, there are now entirely new generator expressions available.

We encourage community involvement, so feel free to get involved! You can download the latest release on the download page, join the mailing lists, and provide feedback through the bug tracker.
story3Kitware Receives DARPA Funding

Collaborative Team to Develop a Visualization Design Environment

Kitware announced the award of $3,981,353 in DARPA XDATA funding to develop an innovative Visualization Design Environment (VDE), an open-source library of tools that will enable rapid development of large-scale data visualization interfaces by novice programmers.

VDE will be developed through a collaboration between world-class visual interface and design experts from Kitware, KnowledgeVis, Stanford University, Harvard University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of Utah. The project will address how to ingest, transform, and visualize large quantities of data from a variety of sources, including formatted data records as well as free-form text documents.

The Visualization Design Environment will provide DARPA researchers with a contemporary data visualization tool for data analysis and understanding. It will be an accessible, easy-to-use library of visualization tools that will enable researchers to work through data more quickly and thoroughly than ever before.

The Visualization Design Environment is sponsored by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) under contract number FA8750-12-C-0300.

Kitware's European Office Celebrates its Second Birthday

In 2010, Kitware opened an office in Lyon, France to provide a close relationship with our customers and collaborators in Europe and to become involved in and share our expertise with European communities in the field of scientific computing. It has been an exciting two years, during which we have had the opportunity to actively collaborate and build new relationships, provide training courses to a variety of customers, and join the European pole of competence in high-performance computing.

The team is looking forward to next year, with plans to build on their mobile, web, and data management expertise, and expand their support of the medical imaging and computer vision communities across Europe.

Julien Jomier, Kitware SAS's President, wrote a celebratory blog post, highlighting the team's successes and outlining the vision for the team's upcoming year.

Bon anniversaire, Kitware SAS!

Kitwareans Present Two Tutorials in Chicago

Rick Avila, Luis Ibez, Julien Finet, and Patrick Reynolds presented two tutorials at RSNA this year in Chicago. On Monday, they presented "Open Source Applications for Medical Imaging Research," which provided an overview of 3D Slicer and a hands-on demonstration of VolView. The tutorial also highlighted licensing considerations when using and developing open-source software.

Following this, the team presented an "Introduction to Open-Source Software Libraries for Medical Imaging."  In this tutorial, participants learned about ITK and VTK and the robust software practices that support such large-scale open-source toolkits. After this introduction, the tutorial became more targeted, showcasing the applications of ITK and VTK for segmentation, registration, and visualization in medical research.
