 One flash drive cost a dermatology practice $150,000. The flash drive contained the electronic protected health information (ePHI) of 2,200 individuals, was unencrypted, and was stolen from a staff member's vehicle. As a result, Adult & Pediatric Dermatology, P.C., (APDerm) of Concord, Massachusetts, became the subject of an investigation by the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) for possible violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
