Introducing Synōvim Healthcare Solutions

The federal funding for the Kansas Regional Extension Center (REC), which supports the adoption, implementation and meaningful use of certified electronic health technology (CEHRT), is scheduled to end September 30, 2013. Kansas Foundation for Medical Care (KFMC) has had great success as the REC, assisting physician practices adopt and implement an EHR. The REC has helped healthcare providers across Kansas earn more than $6.5 million in incentive payments and worked with over 1500 providers in their journey toward Meaningful Use (MU). Kansas has made great strides toward an electronic exchange of health information, but there is still work to be done.

TOPEKA - The regional extension center created two years ago to help Kansas health care providers implement electronic patient records is to be spun off over the next year by its parent organization, the Kansas Foundation for Medical Care.

The new non-profit consulting firm - called Synōvim- will absorb all 15 staff members from the Kansas Regional Extension Center by the time the REC's federal funding runs out September 30, 2013, said REC director Michael Aldridge.

Don't Forfeit $5,000

If 2012 will be your first year to attest for the Medicare EHR incentive payment, you should have begun the 90-day reporting period by October 3. At a minimum, you should be using certified EHR technology on or before October 3 for more than 50 percent of your patient base. You have until December 31 to meet all the Meaningful Use Measures.

If you do not begin the program in 2012, you forfeit $5,000 in incentive payments. Those who attest in 2012 have the ability to claim five years of incentives totaling $44,000. By waiting until 2013, it drops to four years, $39,000 and three years, $24,000 in 2014.

Synōvim can assess your readiness for attestation and provide assistance for obtaining the maximum incentive dollars.

Are Your Privacy and Security Processes Strong Enough for a Federal Review?

Trisha Harkness, Practice Consultant

This chart is a comparison of three Corrective Action Plans entered into by the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and healthcare providers in 2011 and 2012. Entity basics were obtained primarily from each entity's website. Comparison information that is bolded indicates similarity between the Phoenix Cardiac Surgery, P.C. (PCS), and one or both of the comparison clinics. Comparison information that is underlined indicates similarity between Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Associates, Inc. (MEEI), and one or both of the comparison clinics. Underlined and/or bolded text is used to illustrate the similarities in Resolution Agreements and/or Corrective Action Plans between widely varying healthcare providers and different initial HIPAA violations.
