December/2012

I knew I would be blogging tonight (red flag warning) so I figured I would do a proper blog.

Last night at dinner with the gang, there was a fun moment when Dennis and I were selling Ben on the benefits of having a sleep machine.  You see Dennis and I have sleep apnea and enjoy our Resmed CPAP machine allowing us, and our spouses more quality sleep.

I have been a loyal user of Resmed products for about 7 years.  It is cool when you go to parties and guys (major sufferers of apnea) start talking about their sleep machines and you are talking about your S-9 Elite with climate control respiratory ramping, and personalized humidification, you get some real attention.

There are several readers right now know what I am talking about.  Doyle, Mike, Dennis, yeah I know who you are.

Anyway we were doing our best to convince Ben it would do him wonders, but he was having none of it.

His girlfriend Sandy finally asked why he would not try a sleep study and I finally let Ben off the hook.  I explained that Ben is a healthy young man who has would have a hard time hooking a mask to his face.

It is true, that no matter how cool your CPAP machine is, the minute you strap the mask on you quickly go from (in my case) 56 to 90 in a hurry.  When you first strap this thing on, you do think about the fact you are not 27 anymore.

We eventually let Ben out of the hot seat.

However, if any readers out there have partners or significant others that complain about your snoring, ask them to describe the snoring pattern.  If they use the words choking or holding your breath, or drowning, you should consider a sleep study to determine if you have sleep apnea.

Apnea, usually associated with normal aging and or obesity, can lead to high blood pressure, respiratory problems, lethargy, libido problems.  It can also subtract years from your life.  Don't let the worry about looking funky keep you from having a good nights rest.  Besides, you can do a cool Darth Vader impression when you don the mask.

Free Medical Has Arrived

One of my chores today was to head down to Lone Peak Medical and have the great team who splinted me up last week to redress my cast as it has gotten itchy and dirty.

When I arrived and explained my request, it caused some confusion.  After contacting a manager, they decided they could redress my cast and bandages under one condition.  They said I would not be admitted as a patient and I would not be billed.

They explained that it would cause more bureaucratic hassle if I was a patient than if they just did it for free.  I wondered how many times you could be shot or stabbed before it was not too bureaucratic to be admitted.  "It's OK, 38 to the arm, patch him up and send him home."

The PA came in and removed my old wrapping.  The inside of my arm was rashing a bit and the skin between my pinky and next finger was withered and white.  I began massaging my arm and hand and possibly moaning a bit.

I asked if I could wash my hand and arm, as I continued to rub my arm.  The PA looked at me and said, "I'll leave you two alone." and walked out of the room.

Dennis was kind enough to drive me down the mountain to the ER to have the bandages changed.  We had a taco for lunch and made it up the hill in time for him to leave and pick up his daughter from a long day of skiing.

We have really been dumped on the last three days.  Frankly, our statue of Saint Francis is now almost drowning in snow.  We have about 25-30 inches of snow at the house.  The base in the mountains is reaching 100 inches.  Here is a shot of our house from this morning.

We hope your holidays are going as well or better than ours.

I want to say hello to a new reader, Rachelle, one of the best marketing people I had the pleasure to work with in all my career.  She is bright, has a great work ethic, and don't know why she agreed to join our readership, but I am honored to have her aboard.

Now let's take a quick look at how the next to last day of the trading year treated us.

Even though the S&P 500 closed below its 50 day average, the volume was so slow we can not fly the red flag.  Clearly the November rally is over, but there is little conviction in any direction.  We had good housing numbers today but the stalemate at the fiscal corral had short sellers whittling  waiting for the inevitable bad news of no significant deal.

In February 2012 your truly psted his guess for the year end DOW and S&P 500.  13,073 was the DOW and 1358 was the S&P.  We are not that far off, with one day left.  Even I am a bit surprised.

I will be reading Barron's and IBD on line tomorrow.  We will give a recap when we are done.

We did close out our KO PUT from a week ago with a 38% gain.  If that turns out to be my last trade of 2012, I'll proudly take it.
