1936 Duesenberg Model SJ Bohman & Schwartz Convertible Sedan

Duesenberg 1936 SJ B&S

This supercharged Duesenberg was custom built by noted coachbuilders Bohman & Schwartz for the former owner of the New York Yankees, Henry J. (Bob) Topping Jr., a millionaire and socialite who was married to actress Lana Turner.

Bohman & Schwartz of Pasadena, California, was founded in 1932 by Christian Bohman and Maurice Schwartz - both of whom had previously been employed by the renowned coach building firm of Walter M. Murphy at the same Pasadena location.

Bohman & Schwartz design trademarks included skirted rear fenders, sloping painted radiator shells and lowered raked windshields.  This example also has distinctive headlamps and tail lamps and sloping running boards that enhance the flowing lines of the body design.

Powered by the famed in-line eight cylinder 420 cu.in Duesenberg engine, this unique convertible sedan has a rear windscreen which is mounted on a folding, leather covered deck that functions as a dual cowl when in the raised position, and then folds compactly and concealed within a paneled compartment in the seat back. The car has a disappearing top and an elegant diamond-tufted leather interior.

This car is one of three Duesenbergs currently on display at the Museum.
