We are excited to announce that we have finally received approval to break ground on our parking lot project. Our goal was to start construction the day after school let out so the project would be nearing completion by the first day of the 2015-2016 school year, but our native Ospreys had other plans. We were required to wait until all baby Ospreys had left their nests and then members of the Audubon Society came in and relocated the nests.
Silt fencing and tree barricades are being installed today as one of the erosion control requirements. The county inspector will then come out, inspect our erosion control measures, and sign off on the start of construction. The first thing you will notice is the removal of several of our large oak trees. The trees coming down are laurel oaks, not live oaks. Live oaks have a life span of 200-300 years. Laurel oaks live 40-50 years. Our laurel oaks are 40 years old and several have decay. We can assure you that after the parking lot is complete, we will be investing in a landscape design which includes hundreds of trees and shrubs.
The current plan is to start construction on the elementary side of the campus, installing a new entrance off Westchester Boulevard with a new drop off loop ending by the 5th/6th Grade Portables. After the elementary drive and parking areas are complete, we will tackle the drainage issues by the baseball and football fields and then our last phase is to pave the parking area located directly in front of the gym and middle/high school building. Our goal is to be almost done with the elementary drop-off area by the first day of school. The factors that could affect our timetable are out of our control - such as timing for outside agencies to relocate/remove light poles, wires, etc, and of course the weather.
We are excited that this day has finally come and we would like to thank everyone who has so faithfully given to the parking lot project. Please continue to give toward the parking lot because we do not have enough money in hand to complete all three phases of the project yet. Fortunately for us, there is a gentlemen named Jamie Hill who is volunteering his time working with contractors across central Florida to get as much material and labor donated as possible. Please pray for Mr. Hill and for the various companies he will be inviting to be a part of this community project.
