IN THIS ISSUE...
Quote of the Week

"... A church that is indifferent to poverty, or evades responsibility in economic affairs... makes a mockery of reconciliation and offers no acceptable worship to God."

Presbyterian Church (USA) Book of Confessions, Confession of 1967, 9.46
Focus of the Week
As our nation celebrates Labor Day, our focus in worship this coming Sunday, September 6, will be on the workplace, economic justice, and the fair treatment of all workers.  As a community of faith we believe that the whole of our lives matters, and is sanctified by God, and that all people have dignity and deserve respect.
In worship we will continue our study through the Letter of James and we will also hear from College of Wooster student Helen Siegel about The College students' Living Wage Campaign.
Weekly Reflection
Last Sunday at Westminster was energizing and exciting as we welcomed new & returning students of The College of Wooster to journey with us. During worship, we invited students to help us as a church to live up to our motto that Westminster is a church where you can be yourself, where you will be accepted, and where you can make a difference!

We are very thankful for our greeters, Jack and dad John Veney who made everyone feel welcome.  Warm smiles say we're glad you're here!

Cheryl Weiss greets first year students, Connor and Collier, with a friendly welcome to Westminster Presbyterian Church!

Don Gordon engages first-year, Selvam, and exchange student, Joyce, both from Ghana, in conversation.

Church members provided a smorgasbord of brownies - vegan, gluten-free, blonde, with and without nuts - to grateful students (and congregants) at our annual brownie reception following worship! And what a perfect day to enjoy fellowship out on the patio.

So gratifying to be a place where students from all years can connect with each other and community members as well.

Join us on Sunday as we grow in practicing radical hospitality!

See you in worship,
Dries
Worship at Westminster
Worship is at 10:45 am on Sunday mornings in Mackey Hall

This Sunday, the first of every month, join us as we learn to "Walk in Mindfulness" at 7:30 am at Oak Hill Park.

For the the next five weeks I invite you to journey with me in worship through the book of James as we "Connect Through Kindness".  Although this letter is controversial in church history with its emphasis on "good deeds," it instructs us how to put our faith into action and encourages us to  "be doers of the word, and not merely hearers..." (James 1:22).

This coming Sunday, September 6 join us  as we "Walk in Mindfulness" at Oak Hill Park located on Oak Hill Road. This worship opportunity (on the first Sunday of each month, as long as weather permitsis in addition to our regular worship in Mackey Hall at 10:45am. We hope that this worship experience will continue in The Meeting Place in a different format once it gets too cold outside.
Women's Bible Study
Westminster's Women's Bible Study will resume this coming Tuesday, September 8 at 10:00am in The Lounge, the second Tuesday of each month through June 14, 2016.  This year's study will be Come to the Waters by Judy Record Fletcher.  "In this study, we consider the waters of chaos in Genesis, and the River of Life in the last chapter of Revelation, where chaos is no more. Water plays a central role in the stories of creation, the delivery of God's people (through the parting of the Red Sea and the crossing of the Jordan River), judgment of a people weak in faith, and the adoption of the people of God through baptism. Sometimes there is too much water (think Noah) and sometimes there is too little water (think drought in the desert). Together, we will explore some of the Bible's 800 references to water."  If you are interested contact Elaine Smith Snyder for more information or pick up your copy of the book in the office or after worship.

School Kit Packing, Sunday, September 13
Children in Syria receive school and hygiene kits. Photo: IOCC/GOPA
Stay after worship on Sunday, Sept. 13 and pack Westminster's contribution of 100+ school kits. Give hope while having fun!

Following the two latest shipments of Church World Service School Kits to partner International Orthodox Christian Charities for children in Syria and Bosnia-Herzegovina, CWS has just over 5,000 School Kits in stock, against pending requests for 15,000 from Romania and 3,000 from Moldova - and more requests are expected soon.

CWS School Kits give children buffeted by war, natural disaster and poverty some of the basic tools for learning, so it is vitally important that we replenish supplies as quickly as possible. Stay after worship on Sunday, September 13 and pack Westminster's contribution of 100+ school kits. Give hope while having fun!
People to People Ministries
People to People logo The new school year has begun and People to People has suggested canned fruit, apple sauce, syrup, complete pancake mix, crackers, spaghetti, and spaghetti sauce would be good additions to their food pantry.  You are encouraged to bring any or all of these items and place them in the marked bin in the Mackey narthex through September.  Let's fill the kitchen cupboards of our friends and neighbors.

Green Tip of the Week
People Spend 16 Minutes Every Day Doing Something They Think Is Good. But NOPE - It's Bad. From Upworthy.com:  "When I learned to drive, I was told it was more wasteful to turn off a vehicle and restart it than it was to leave it idling for a few minutes. I'm afraid I'm showing my age because thanks to efficient electric ignitions in today's vehicles, idling a car for just 10 seconds burns more fuel than restarting it."
Showing Hospitality is Peacemaking!
Help make Westminster the warm and inviting place we are called to be! Sign up to be a Sunday morning greeter, to provide flowers, or bring goodies for fellowship time after worship. If you are interested in helping, please sign up through Sign Up Genius , on Sunday mornings on the easel in back of Mackey Hall, or by contacting  Beth Coetzee (330-263-2398) in the church office.
