Reflection of The Week

As we continue our Lenten journey on this Third Sunday of Lent, we will explore how the environment reflects the Image of God.  A small group of Westminster's woman have been studying the Horizons Bible Study, entitled "Reconciling Paul", on the second Tuesday of each month.  Last month we meditated on 2 Corinthians 5:17, 20 and Romans 8:19-23. These readings engaged us in the questions of "how we are a new creation through our faith" and "how we can extend the way we are a new creation into the whole of creation.  One way many Presbyterian churches respond to these questions is by becoming an Earth Care Congregation:

PC(USA) Environmental Ministries has released the denomination's new certification program for environmentally responsible churches, called "Earth Care Congregations: A Guide to Greening Presbyterian Churches."  The goal of the program is to inspire churches to care for God's earth in a holistic way, through integrating earth care into all of church life.

To become an Earth Care Congregation, churches affirm the Earth Care pledge to integrate environmental practices and thinking into all facets of congregational life including worship, education, facilities, and outreach.  Read more here.

As you prepare for worship this Sunday I encourage you to learn more about "Earth Care Congregations" and to consider if and how you can help Westminster work towards renewing the whole of creation.

Daylight Savings Time Reminder
Don't forget to "Spring Forward" Sunday, March 8th for the start of Daylight Savings Time (and more sunshine and better weather hopefully!).

What You Think Matters Campaign

"What You Think Matters" is Westminster's Session campaign to get your input on how we can best communicate with you and the community at large.

As we engage in ministry, communication has become increasingly important.  Over the past years we have seen an increase in ways that churches can communicate to their members, visitors, and the global community.  Within the next month you will have the opportunity to complete this online survey that will help us better communicate with you. You will also receive a different survey via US postal service to be completed with your updated personal information for our church directory.

Please complete the electronic survey here.
Children to Share Easter Baskets with Homebound Members
It is nearly time for Westminster's annual tradition of delivering Easter baskets to our homebound members.  Under the faithful direction of Ferenc and Candy Relle, all children are invited to join us Sunday, March 29th at 9am in the Sunday School room to color eggs and decorate baskets for our homebound members.  All materials will be provided.  Please RSVP to Beth if you plan to help deliver baskets after church so that we have adequate transportation for the event.  Come one!  Come all!  All children and grandchildren (and children-at-heart) are welcome!

People to People logo

Think "breakfast" when you think about People to People food items for March and April - hot and cold cereals, complete pancake mix (just add water) and syrup are the most needed items. Peanut butter and jelly make tasty spreads for toast, too.

The donation bin is under the bench in the narthex.

Green Tip of the Week

Avoid commercial air fresheners. That "fresh scent" also causes you to inhale harmful chemicals such as phosphates, chlorine bleach, or ammonia. Also, those spray fresheners don't just disappear into thin air - the chemicals linger on, staying in the home as they land on surfaces and floors and sink into carpets. These unnatural substances can cause allergic reactions, trigger asthma attacks, and irritate the lungs. Not only that, natural air fresheners are less expensive than their chemical-based counterparts.

"We are an Intentionally Inclusive Church"
Westminster Presbyterian Church embraces the "house" metaphor for our community as we worship at the Westminster Church House and have a strong sense of hospitality and desire to be a welcoming and inclusive church for all. We endeavor to give voice to a "progressive" expression of Christianity that emphasizes among other things:
  • intellectual integrity in matters of faith;
  • acceptance of all people regardless of race, creed, age, cultural background, or sexual orientation;
  • openness toward the value of other religious traditions;
  • a strong commitment to social justice, peacemaking, and the care of our planet.
