Reflection of The Week

This week we continue our Lenten journey with the theme, "I am Human: Created in the Image of God".  On Sunday we will explore the intersection between our Christian witness and oppression, especially as it relates to the dehumanization of people using the biblical narrative, reformed theology, and our interpretation of science. Pastor Dries will have a short reflection on Genesis 9:18-28, and College of Wooster sophomore Linnea Johnson will speak on "Embracing Our Animal Selves: A Personal Essay.  Linnea states:

"We must embrace our animal selves, for if we, as human beings, consciously accept that we are a biological species with needs, instincts, and an evolutionary past, we will treat both the Earth and one another with greater respect".

Looking forward to seeing you in worship.

Blessings,

Dries

What You Think Matters Campaign

"What You Think Matters" is Westminster's Session campaign to get your input on how we can best communicate with you and the community at large.

As we engage in ministry, communication has become increasingly important.  Over the past years we have seen an increase in ways that churches can communicate to their members, visitors, and the global community.  Within the next month you will have the opportunity to complete this online survey that will help us better communicate with you. You will also receive another survey via US postal service to be completed with your updated personal information for our church directory.

Please complete the electronic survey here.

Update from Carolyn Hockey
Dear Westminster Community,

Greetings from South Africa! I hope you are finding meaning in the fast for Lent in anticipation of a lovely Eastertide! I'm writing to you to ask you for your continued support and prayers during a time of transition in my program.

Since the new year it has become clear that I cannot finish my YASC year in Burundi. I am so heartbroken to be leaving this country. The people, the culture, the mountains all mean so much to me. I am so glad that I was able to come here and have the experiences that I did. I'm grateful for all of the people that I encountered and everything they taught me. I will also cherish the growth in my faith that the people of Burundi taught me.

I am so lucky and glad to say that I will be finishing my YASC year in Grahamstown, South Africa! I arrived here a week ago and have begun settling in to new work and a new environment already. I am working at Holy Cross School, an independent primary school. I will be focused working with the third grade teaching reading and helping with math, as well as doing administrative work for the school and planning Reading Camp!

Another interesting part of my new placement is my housing: I am living in the guesthouse of an Anglican monastery. The brothers are of course all very welcoming, supportive and fun to talk to. I feel lucky to have this community to help me transition into life here.

Again, thank you all for your continued support. I know that with such a powerfully supportive community behind me that I will have support from all sides as I make this transition. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

In Peace,

Carolyn

Green Tip of the Week

Turn off lights when you leave rooms or go home. Turning off lights will save lots of energy and money, but this is not always done. If people in your workplace get in the habit of turning off their lights when they leave rooms for meetings, lunches, and/or when they leave to go home this will save a significant amount of energy and money.

"We are an Intentionally Inclusive Church"
Westminster Presbyterian Church embraces the "house" metaphor for our community as we worship at the Westminster Church House and have a strong sense of hospitality and desire to be a welcoming and inclusive church for all. We endeavor to give voice to a "progressive" expression of Christianity that emphasizes among other things:
  • intellectual integrity in matters of faith;
  • acceptance of all people regardless of race, creed, age, cultural background, or sexual orientation;
  • openness toward the value of other religious traditions;
  • a strong commitment to social justice, peacemaking, and the care of our planet.
