Reflection of the Week
In this last Weekly News of the year I want to thank you for your generosity that has not only sustained our ministry this past year, but will take us into the future.   Bill Weiss, our Financial Secretary reports;

We are very pleased with the response to this year's stewardship drive.  As of Sunday, December 14 we have received pledges of $121,399 for 35 pleading units.  Five of these pledges are from those who had not pleaded last year.  This is most encouraging.   Even more exciting is the fact 63% of those who pledged for 2014 have generously increased their pledge for 2015.  We are awaiting responses from 16 pledging units who pledged in the past but have yet to respond to this stewardship drive.  We are hopeful to hear from you

This successful Stewardship drive followed your strong financial support of the Church House ADA bathroom campaign.  Our Building and Finance Cohort (David Noble, Caryl Slater and John Veney) reports;

Thanks to a generous congregation and a successful fundraising campaign, plans for an ADA compliant bathroom are underway. We are very thankful for the help of John Gordon (Don & Nahida's son and architect from New York) who got us going and now a local engineer and architect is having a look at preliminary plans and the space and a contractor has made tentative suggestions. The College of Wooster is working with us and we anticipate receiving a formal quote from the contractor shortly. A completion date cannot be estimated at this point but we are excited as we see things progressing. If you have questions, please contact any member of the Building or Finance cohort.

It was with this spirit of generosity that we responded to a call from one of our parishioners who is a teacher and saw the need of one of the students in her class.  Instead of carrying over unspent money from our Mission budget, we renovated her trailer to make it livable for her and her son.  As word got out that we are helping this family, members and friends donated money and responded to the family's need for furniture and household goods.  This Christmas they will have a warm house in which to be family and starting in January the student will be able to study at a desk in his own home.

After

As we come to the end of the year I want to remind you that a great way to support the ministry of Westminster is by donating stock.  Giving appreciated stock is a tax-wise way to support the work of the church and the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. Please contact Caryl Slater or Carly Jones at 330-263- 2398 for information if you are interested.  Donations can also be made by credit card by clicking here.

Thank you again for your generosity and support.  May the limitless love of God surround you this Christmas and in the New Year to come!

Joy in Giving

From Central American Medical Outreach

Thank you to our friends from Westminster Presbyterian Church, who Wednesday were in CAMO's warehouse folding linens and scrubs to go to medical staff in Honduras.

The crew is here the last Wednesday of every month, and Wednesday, they were joined by Jeanne Bruce, who is CAMO's self-professed oldest volunteer. We'll leave it up to Jeanne to reveal her actual age. But we will say this - CAMO welcomes adult volunteers of all ages, education levels, and skill sets.

The women from Westminster said they volunteer with CAMO every month because it is a fun way to catch up with each other and to support an organization that truly needs and values their help. When asked why the women were in the warehouse instead of Christmas shopping, Jeanne simply said that Christmas comes every year and the need in Honduras is never-ending.

Memorial Service for Flo Shafer

You are invited to attend a service of organ and handbell music on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at 2:00pm in Mackey Hall, Westminster Presbyterian Church to celebrate the life of Florence Shafer.  Flo passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2014 after a protracted battle with Alzheimer's disease.  Ken thought it most appropriate to have a service of music with which to celebrate his mother's life, since she was, in addition to being the wife of a Presbyterian minister and homemaker for their active family, an accomplished church musician, playing the organ and directing both vocal and bell choirs.  Flo's services extended to churches in: West Carrollton; Danville, IL; Royal Oak, MI; Rocky River; Columbus; and Cincinnati.  The service will include Ken Shafer on the organ and the handbell duo EKCO Ringers from Cleveland. Following the service there will be a cookie reception.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Flo's name may be made to People to People Ministries.

Third Annual UKirk Retreat
2015 College Conference   Peace Bound

How do we seek the peace that God gives? Where can you participate in bringing about peace in the world? These are just two of the questions that eight College of Wooster students and their two chaperones will be considering at Montreat January 2 - 5, 2015. At this year's annual college conference, entitled Peace Bound, young adults will explore how peace can be found within ourselves as children of God and how that identity motivates us to share and build peace in our broken world. Please keep our group in your prayers as we travel to North Carolina to pray, worship, play, discuss, and explore peace together.

Green Tip of the Week
How to Cut Home Water Waste
The world's dwindling water resources are being used by a growing population with increasing demands. Believe it or not, most of the US is expected to face water shortages in the coming years; 26 states were declared natural disaster areas by the USDA in July 2012 due to drought conditions.According to EarthShare member organization Food & Water Watch, the average American uses 1,190 gallons of water per day. Much of that is hidden inside the products we buy, the energy we use and the food we eat, but our laundry, hygiene, dishwashing, habits also use more than the global average.

Here are some simple, inexpensive ways to cut back on water use at home:

  • Use less water: one of the clearest steps toward water conservation is also the most obvious one -- simply use less. Start by taking shorter showers, filling up the dishwasher and laundry machines before you run them, and turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth.
  • Check for leaks: look at faucets and pipes to make sure water isn't escaping.
  • Choose smart appliances: water-saving shower heads, low-flow toilets, and faucet aerators can lower your water bill.
  • Go meatless: it takes 4,000 to 18,000 gallons of water to produce one hamburger because of the food, water and facilities that cows need. By reducing meat in your diet, you can drastically cut down on not only water use but greenhouse gas emissions as well.
  • Plant drought-resistant vegetation: some native plants, shrubs, and trees require less watering. Consider xeriscaping -- landscaping and gardening in ways that reduce or eliminate the need for supplemental water from irrigation. The traditional turf lawn is one of the most environmentally unfriendly types of landscaping! For houseplants, try using water leftover from cooking instead of running the faucet again.
  • Go renewable: Half of the water we use goes to power generation. Renewable sources like solar and wind use significantly less water than coal and nuclear. Make the switch.
  • Fill up a water bottle: instead of buying disposable plastic water bottles, fill up a refillable water container to decrease the energy used in producing, transporting, and disposing plastic bottles.
  • Avoid buying new "water-intensive" products: cotton, electronics and paper all require a lot of water in their production. Try buying used clothing and recycled paper whenever possible and resist the urge to get the latest gadget every year if your existing device is in working order.

"We are an Intentionally Inclusive Church"
Westminster Presbyterian Church embraces the "house" metaphor for our community as we worship at the Westminster Church House and have a strong sense of hospitality and desire to be a welcoming and inclusive church for all. We endeavor to give voice to a "progressive" expression of Christianity that emphasizes among other things:
  • intellectual integrity in matters of faith;
  • acceptance of all people regardless of race, creed, age, cultural background, or sexual orientation;
  • openness toward the value of other religious traditions;
  • a strong commitment to social justice, peacemaking, and the care of our planet.
